Just looking at my certificate on the marriage of James to Annie Spong yes the father of James is David and he was a Stonemason/journeyman deceased. Now turned the page and find David was also cited as James father on the marriage to Dorothea. It is amazing the discrepancies that are on the forms relating to James. All the marriages tie in the same age as being born 1883. The headstone on the grave also, the death certificate, coroners report too but the burial in consecrated ground gives his age as 65years.His career is also different engineer, engine fitter, marine engineer/shipyard. This definitely is my grandfather but his birth and prior info I hit a brick wall. Thanks

The stated occupations are not incompatible with each other.

He was obviously basically an engineer, employed in slightly different capacities at the different stages of his life

Sorry, Dorothy, not finding anything. Every lead I have followed has turned out not to be the right James.

Hi yes it is the most frustrating journey to find info that I have been on so I am not surprised to hear you say that. There are so many James Bowman people. As he was so consistent in using James, I feel that this really was his name. It is amazing how both of my grandfathers are mysteries, they both seem to have just "appeared". I will just have to join the "Carry on gang" and carry on searching. I did wonder if there was a name change to the surname but once again this was consistent.
Just a thought that passed through my mind ----he was 33 yrs when he wed my grandmother could he have had a previous marriage

I keep coming to this one born in right year.
1891Abergale Wales
James Bowman a boarder born 1882 Abergale
Arthur 1884 Abergale
With a Elizabeth Edwards

1901 Scotland
Robert Conkie born Scotland 1846
Agnes 1846 Scotland
Then they have as children
Christina Bowman 1879 England
James Bowman 1883 wales apprentice marine engineer
Arthur n Bowman 1885 (Neil)?
Alexander B Bowman 1876 England(Widnes Lancashire)
Rosina Bowman(his Wife)
Grace B Bowman 10months

Alexander B Bowman was also a engineer as was Arthur N Bowman.Alexander and wife Mary(maybe second wife?) went to USA followed by their son Jeffrey born Scotland 1912 in 1929.

If someone could check the 1901 Scotland census to come up the exact connection between the Conki's and Bowman's it may throw up some clues.

The only problem is I have searched this family and it looks like their parents were Peter Bowman born Scotland @ 1846 die 1890 Wales and Mary nee McArthur.

I thought it was worth a go as if they were in Scotland,it could be the reason I couldn't find them in 1911.
I also thought James's son Arthur Robert might have been named after the brother Arthur!!

Could someone who has FMP Sub please have a look at the baptismal record for Arthur Neil Bowman 1885 Abergele Denbighshire to see if it sheds any light on his parentage as I feel he is the brother of the James Bowman that Maryb has found above.

Edit

There is also a baptismal record for a James Bowman 1882 in the same collection

Viewing these records might help in our search for James or confirm this is one to eliminate.

Thanks in advance....

Thanks Jacqueline. Hmmmm Father not David. I cant help thinking there is a Scottish connection somewhere along the line for James as we can't see a birth registration for him on FreeBMD.

James said that he was a bachelor when he wed my grandmother Ethel Diamond in 1915
Regards the John Edward Bowman this was the person and family that always came up as the only possibility and I did not have any clear info to go on. It has been suggested that he was older than the age he gave but he was very consistent in his age so I don't know on this one.

Have you considered that James may have been illegitimate but David
Bowman [1863] may have been his father when he was still a Mason.
Is it known what his trade was when he married Jane Deary.

There are no other David Bowman's who were Mason's after 1881-- there was one in 1851 who was born 1820 Scotland but he became a Miner by 1861.
