Carole Mac Report 17 Nov 2009 20:49

Hi all.
I am looking for information on a John Martin Phillips Lavin please.
I have his christening on 4 Sept 1825 at St Gluvias Church Penryn Cornwall UK.
His parents were Michael Jenkin Lavin and Mary (nee Bennett).
Siblings were Henry Bennet, Sarah, Mary, Elizabeth, Andromache, Edward John Haweis, and Michael Jenkin (jnr).

I have John Martin Phillips Lavin on the electoral roll in NZ in 1858, but don't know when he went to NZ.

I would love the UK census listings for him and any of the family for 1831, 1841, 1851.

I am also trying to find a marriage for him, and the births of any children - no success yet. I don't know if he married and had children in England before he left for NZ. He, his wife, and 3 sons were killed in NZ in 1869.
Any help on the above requests would be much appreciated.
Many thanks,
Carole

Thank you Sharon, yes that is Michael in 1861.
It is his brother John Martin Phillips Lavin that I am after in the earlier census lists because I know he was in NZ by 1858. He is being elusive. And no sign of a marriage that I can find or births of any of his sons (no names known).
Thank you for your interest.

Carole

Thank you so much alviegal. I am in Aus and have just come online again in the morning.
Yes they are all from the same family, the marriage records are great because I didn't have some of them. Where did you find those please?
I have also found various records of him in NZ through to his death in 1869. The earliest I have found is the one in1858.
As we can't find any records in UK I am wondering if by a long shot he went to South Africa before NZ? His brother migrated to South Africa about 1849 and died a couple of years later. I might try to find somewhere to search there if that is possible.
Thank you again

Hi Carole,

The records are all from http://www.cornwall-opc.org/

Is this an account of the death of John and his family? How awful if it is! What a gruesome end for them!
http://www.nzetc.org/tm/scholarly/tei-GudRemi-t1-body1-d53.html
http://www.nzetc.org/tm/scholarly/tei-Cow02NewZ-c31.html
and others.

Have also found this. Have no idea if this one is connected or not but it may be. From http://www.angelfire.com/bc/Vincina/Burial.html

1857 Old Napier Cemetery - Burial Records 1850's-1870

Good luck

Hi Liz,
Thank you so much for that info. I have just logged on and won't have time to look at it at the moment but will do so later in the morning (going out to an appointment), but I am sure the baby Harry will be related. That now gives us an earlier arrival in NZ for the family.
As well as doing our family tree I am assisting the local NZ museum in trying to find out the names of Mrs lavin and the 3 boys. The history there is sketchy. The story of their deaths was a gruesome one! We have been to the area and it is such a beautiful spot.
Thank you again so much for your help. I'll be back in touch when I have read the reports.
Kindest regards,
Carole

Add
The NZ bmd does have a Harry Lavin born in 1857 but no more info. Based on the Napier Cemetery record listing him as an infant of John, I have ordered the birth cert, and hope I get the mother's name from that. At least I have a start. I am going to NZ and will be visiting Napier next week, so will go to the Cemetery.
I have now also read the book reports on the killings, yes, it is as we knew. I have printed them out for filing.
Thank you for your interest. Now to find them in UK in 1831 or 1851?????? or when they left.

Bingo!! Her name was Jane Carbis from Penzance, Cornwall and she had a sister in Ballarat, Victoria. The children were Hawles, 11, Miles 8 and Henry Herman 3. I will let you look at all these records with John in.

Liz, I can't believe the time you must have spent on this request of mine, thank you so very much.
I am relatively new to researching so don't know the extra places to look other than the main sites and 'googling'. I am slowly learning thanks to people like you.
I had found Miles Lavin and Herman Harry Lavin on the NZ BDM and have ordered their birth certs this morning. The Hawles Lavin I haven't seen anywhere. It is probably Haweis because that is a family name through the Lavins. There is another birth on NZ BDM as unamed in 1858 so that more than likely is him.
I can't find a marriage anywhere for John Lavin and Jane Carbis but will keep looking.
I will peruse all the sites you have given me this evening when I have quiet time!
I am so very thankful you have followed my thread through - it is an interesting story, isn't it, albeit horrible.
My best wishes to you,
Regards, Carole

Surname(s): LAVIN : ROYAPPEN : WILLIAMS

I am looking for information relating to "Charles Williams", his family, and his relatives. Charles was born about
1820 in Penryn, Cornwall where he married Andromache Lavin in 1847. He arrived in Durban on the Minerva in
1850. He appears to have been an owner or an overseer of a sugar property in Isipingo, Natal from around 1850
to 1869. He had three children with his wife Andromache. He might have had additional children from his
indentured servant "Chauramah Royappen". I am also interested in other Lavins which came from Penryn and
Penzance. Several of Andromache Lavin's relations also immigrated to South Africa.

Associated Regions: South Africa > Natal

I hadn't seen that Ozibird, but will look into it and make contact. These Lavins spread themselves far and wide - they are my husband's family.
Thank you for your add on. A few of the Lavins married into the Williams family.

Carole
