It would have been nice if Christine had given some of the *sources* of this information that sent me, for one, on some wild goose chases.

Quite obviously the marriage is the Atkinson + Marsden one.

Where on earth did the Segger / Seggar name come from?? just for starters. Certainly not from Christine's father's birth certificate, it seems.

I strongly suggest getting the Edgar Atkinson birth certificate and getting his parents' real names.

Oh, for pete's sake.

Name: Mary R V Marsden
> Mother's Maiden Surname: Segger
Date of Registration: Jul Aug Sep 1924
Registration district: Wandsworth
Registration county: Greater London
Volume Number: 1d
Page Number: 1175

Mary Marsden who married Edgar Dennis Atkinson -- HER mother was Segger.

Name: Elizabeth W Segger
Spouse: Alfred H Marsden
Date of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar 1923
Registration district: Wandsworth
Registration county (inferred): Surrey
Volume Number: 1d
Page Number: 827

So that does settle that!

Did Edgar/Dennis possibly return to Yorkshire and remarry?

There are 2 Edgar D Atkinson marriages:

and 2 Edgar D Atkinson births:

Edgar D Atkinson Apr May Jun 1923 Southampton Hampshire, Berkshire

The other one died in WWII:

Four members of this website have Ethel Aaron born 1889, Knottingley, Yorkshire, in their trees.

Knottingley is in Pontefract registration district, and the birth posted here

Births Sep 1889
Aaron Ethel Pontefract 9c 102

is the only actual one, and must be the same one.

Janey, I don't want to confuse things but that was me that posted the info on that Ethel Aaron but I have nothing really to back it up - just gut instinct. Given that we have Edgar's mother as Arran and Audrey's as Arron, I looked on FreeBMD using phonetic spellings for a possible birth for Ethel and that looked the most likely.

I haven't been able to find an marriage though between Harold and Ethel so I still think I would buy that birth for Edgar.

I getcha, rootgatherer. What I meant was that it would be worth contacting the GR members with her in their trees, to see what they knew about her. That could rule her out -- it's always important to definitively rule out wrong possibilities -- or could suggest she's the right one, for instance if the posters know what all their Ethel's siblings did, but not her. Then she would be worth pursuing.

The Edgar birth certificate is certainly needed. If it says "Ethel Aaron" or Arron etc., it will still be an open question. ;)

Christine - just another thought regarding a bit from your opening post "my grandmother told me that Ethel had a picture of Jewish family on the mantlepiece." Can you work out a rough timescale for this please. Just wondering if we could work backwards from a death for Ethel. Of course, we can't be certain what name her death was registered in as we haven't found a marriage.

hello, wow so much info, thankyou so much.
My apologies for putting the wrong surname for my grandmother, she was Mary Marsden, Sister Hilda.
Mary and Dennis married in London in 1945.
My dad was born in Queen charlotte's hospital hammersmith in june 1945.

Christine

Christine Report 25 Nov 2010 14:52

my sources are my family, my dad, my auntie hilda, and my nan Mary before she died.
We don't know anything about Harold and Ethel besides their name, that belief they lived in Leeds, and my aunt saying that Harold was a dentist, we have nothing else, i'm hoping that someone from that side of the family will recognise it and get in touch.
Thankyou for all the research there's lots for me to check out.

The segger/seggar surname come from my great grandmother Winifred who married Alfred Herbert Marsden, they had my nan Mary and her sister Hilda.
My apologies for the mix up.
We only know Dennis as being Dennis.
Dennis and Mary spilt up when my dad was still a baby, we have no other info, Mary and my Dad came back to london, as far as we know Dennis stayed in Leeds.

Christine

Christine Report 25 Nov 2010 14:59

The picture my nan Mary told me about would have been around 1945/46.
Mary and Dennis married in London in 1945, then moved up to Leeds, but spilt up not long after, my dad was around 2/3 years old when they spilt up.
I've contacted some mebers with Audrey Atkinson in their family trees but no links so far, but i'll keep asking.

Christine Report 25 Nov 2010 15:09

hello i just wanted to say a huge thankyou to all of you for all your hard work, the Edgar Dennis, who died in 92 looks like it could be my grandad, this is amazing, after mary and Dennis/Edgar spilt we had no idea if he was alive or dead, my dad never had any contact.
We want to find out about Edgar/Dennis' side of the family, so i'll start digging the Arran and Audrey lines.

Christine - you could buy that death certificate for Edgar, just to see who the informant was? If it was me I would buy his birth certificate at the same time. If you do decide to get them, please come back and let us know what information is on them.

So, we would be looking for a death for Ethel after 1945 ish?

rootgatherer

rootgatherer Report 25 Nov 2010 15:23

It would be good to see the details of that 1911 census , just to see if Ethel is married or single.

There is this marriage but I don't see any children from it. I wonder if Ethel wasn't free to marry Harold?

i'll definately check the birth certificate for Edgar, perhaps it's the same man.
The atkinson/marsden marriage in wandsworth is definately the one.
As to the matter of Ethel's death, i have no time scale, no idea, like i said Dennis/Edgar and my nan Mary Marsden spilt up aroun 1948 when my dad was around 3 years old.
We know their names, and that they lived in Leeds, after the marriage spilt there was no other contact, i'm hoping someone will see these posts and recognise their own family.

i have deleted the other thread for Harold Atkinson, i really appreciate all the investigating from everyone.
I hope that by posting this thread i can find out when and where people died, and find out more about my dad's side of the family.

Christine, what you absolutely need first is the Edgar D Atkinson _ Mary Marsden marriage certificate.

Unless Mr. Atkinson didn't report the facts, it will tell you
- his age
- his father's name
- his father's occupation

You absolutely need that info in order to track him and his parents farther back.

Since it seems pretty sure we have the right Edgar D Atkinson, it would make sense to order the birth certificate too. It will tell you:
- his father's full name
- his father's occupation
- his mother's full name at birth

Again, you will absolutely need that information.

It only takes a few days to get certificates in the mail.

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

Then just come back here with the info!

You can answer all in one post, by the way, you don't have to answer each post separately. ;)
