i did think that syer was a strange name. your explaination sounds good to me
unless it was the father joseph, because edith always lived with her grandfather and never knew her mum, so something very strange happened around that time. rumour was that her father was a traveller
great work people i really feel we are on the right tracks with this, thank for your effort
if of course you come up with anything else please post anybody wants to add then pls do
thanks very much once again

as a footnote, elizabeth was 25 when she had edith in 1884, josiah was 20 whereas joseph was 55? suspect a bit of adultery

You maybe right Paul, with any luck Nicky may turn a maintenance order up and it may tell you more?

Keeping my fingers crossed.

Can`t find any sort of maintenance order.......been giving a bit of thought to maybe josiah`s father being Edith Mauds father as suggested earlier by Paul

I`ve traced Joseph and wife Susan {josiahs parents} back in every census till 1851, and found what I think is their marriage in 1848 hoping i may find evidence that Joseph was also a Josiah, but no such luck.

Paul states that Edith Maud never knew her mother....were the Dearsleys so ashamed of their daughter giving birth out of wedlock that they took the baby from her and cut themselves off from her?

Paul could you please put up every detail from Edith mauds birth cert please?...I`m especially intrested in who was the informant..............

Joseph seemed to be a Pub landlord/Gardner up until 1881 when he was a Railway Labourer and his son. an Ag. Lab ....could they have been working in the area where Elizabeth was a Servant?

Looks like this confirms Joseph senior was definetly Joseph not Josiah...

Death:
Burial:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Admittedly its a submitted entry, but probably enough clarification that he wasn`t Josiah..
