My late Father was George William Neal. He was born in Sutton, Surrey in 1917. He had an older half sister[Mother's child], and an older full sister. His father Charles T. Neal was born in Sutton? and died there also in December, 1942 aged in his sixties. My paternal Grandmother's maiden name was ?Davis, and died aged approx. aged 48years in ?1925, when my Father was just a child.Additionally my Grandmother may have lived in the Epsom area.I would be extremely grateful if anyone can help me. My Father married my Mother Alice Price in October 1939.

I am not finding an obvious marriage for his parents. Might his mother have been married before?

You can obtain his mother's forename and any previous names from his birth certificate.

Yes, Madmeg I was wondering whether grandma had been married before... perhaps 1st husband could have died in WW1?

There is no obvious Charles T Neal's in 1911 that I can see or births for the right year, but there is this Charles in 1891 born Sutton

As George had an older half-sister, it is quite possible that his mother was married before. Unfortunately that will mean that it will not be Davis on the marriage certificate.

I saw that but didn't want to complicate matters further! Now we're looking for a marriage of a Lilian Davis or Florence Davis to a Hart or Peck, respectively.

Charles Burrows married Lilian and is on the 1911 census - Can't see the other couple at the moment

I really think you need the birth certificate of your father to confirm his mother's forename and any previous surname.

Thankyou for this information K. I also determined that my Grandfather was born about 1877.
Additionally my Father's older half sister Isabel's Father's surname was, I believe Tickner; but I have not been able to find a marriage between Charles Neal and my paternal Grandmother. Ironically I cannot also find a birth entry either, therefore do not have her christian name.

I repeat again, which advice seems to have been by-passed, that I think you need the birth certificate of your father.

Meg is really right - you do need your father's birth cert to find his mother's name and then hopefully we can relook at earlier records and try to find a marriage for his father if there was one.

The birth cert can be sent for online from the General Record Office and should arrive in about a week and I think now costs £9.50. It wil also confirm his father's occupation and confirm if I found the right family in the census. I can't see the Charles Neal at all in the 1911 census but did find the family I think below in 1901 but you really need to check this is the right family

I did find a possible marriage for Henry Thomas Ticknor and Clara Jane Davis in 1909 Epsom Dec Quarter 2a 47 and the couple appear to be living separatley in 1911. Henry is living with relations as brother in law. I have posted possible details of Clara Jane and Isabella below in 1911. Clara Jane is listed as married two years with one child from the marriage. A Henry T Ticknor aged 33 died in 1913 in Epsom

Indeed, yes I will endeavour to obtain a copy of my Father's birth certificate as a good starting point., and will keep you updated with my progress.
