Find Ancestors

Hi,

I'm doing my partner's side of the family and I am particularly stuck on her Marshall line of the family tree.

I unfortunately have to wait until I get paid on Tuesday 31st August before I can send off for the birth certificate of my partner's great-great Grandfather Edward George Marshall, but I'm trying to work it out myself before purchasing the certificate so any help would be greatly appreciated.

This is where I have gotten to so far:

Henry Marshall - born 1842 in Chichester, Sussex
Maria Marshall - born 1849 in Bow, London

Henry John Marshall 1875 in somewhere called Athlone
Maria Ettie Marshall 1878 in Notting Hill, London
William Marshall 1882 in Hammersmith, London
Rose Marshall 1884 in Windsor, Berkshire
James Noel Marshall 1887 in Windsor, Berkshire
Elizabeth Matilda Marshall 1889 in Windsor, Berkshire
EDWARD GEORGE MARSHALL 1892 in Windsor, Berkshire
Mary Ann Marshall 1895 in Windsor, Berkshire
Moorelvin Marshall 1898 in Windsor, Berkshire

I am trying to find the parents marriage so I can go further back in the trees, I have looked for Henry Marshall on the 1851 Census and I can't seem to find him in Sussex or anywhere with his birth information.

Any help in locating a marriage so I can get Maria's maiden name as well as finding Henry Marshall on an earlier census would be greatly appreciated.

What was Henry b1842's occupation? Athlone is in Ireland. Are the younger Marshalls in your post the children of Henry and Maria?

Athlone is in Ireland so maybe they married there.

William Boyles is described as a grandfather of the head which doesnt seem right?

Is there anywhere I can find the marriage if it did happen in Athlone?


The birth places vary for the Parents so this is why i am having trouble finding them on the census.

Probably means Grandfather to the children ( i.e. Maria's father) .......... but again the age difference is not sufficient.

Is it also a coincidence that in the 1891 and 1901 census Henry and Maria lived next door to a Fred Marshall and family???

unless its a typo error Michael: William Boyles is 8 years older than Maria.

The 1901 is a bit odd! Henry, Maria, James Edward and Moorlevin are shown as living at 14 Keppel Row and the rest of the family at 15!

William Boyles at 57 couldn't be Maria's, 49, father! Mind you, she has only aged 2 years since 1891! But she aged 20 years between 1871 and 1881!

Ages on censuses ( and even more so on transcribed censuses) are notoriously unreliable.

Does it say where William Boyes was born ?


The last 7 names on Potty's 1881 list are borders.

Given Maria's pob in 1881, there is this possible marriage:

1901 census gives Camberwell as William Boyes pob, quite close to the Peckham given by Maria in 1881!

Yes, Potty I was looking at that marriage too but it looks as if that Maria married George Haynes as follows

Can anyone view the original of the census showing William Boyes as grandfather.
Both Maria's and William's ages may be copied wrong.

Michael, I have checked the 1901 image and the ages are transcribed correctly. As I posted above, the family is shown as living in two houses, with William Boyles living with William - 19, Rose - 17 and Mary Ann 6.

Maria POB is shown as Middx, London although the Middx is crossed through as it is on other entries on the page which refer to areas of London. If her pob is correct in 1881, ie Peckham, it should be Surrey not Middx.

I do wonder if Henry married twice, both times to a Maria but we can't even find one marriage!
