Gillian
The family may well have called him Iolan ( though the Welsh form of John is usually Ioan .... that's ioan not LOAN !!)) but he was registered as John.
Same way that Henry becomes Harry, Francis turns to Frank. Ann is Nancy etc etc.
No name change, just variations.

I think that Susan's census on page one does seem to be the right family. I must accept that I am reading the name wrongly although having looked again at my printout it still looks like I o l a n. Thanks Julie regards Gillian

Julie

Julie Report 27 Sep 2010 16:43

Is the census that Susan posted on page 1 not the right family then.

When i put the name Iolan into the search for the 1861 nothing comes up

Gillian

Gillian Report 27 Sep 2010 16:41

I thought it was the same Iolan the way I read it, on the 1861 census living at GlascoteTamworth with Sarah 59 widow and Faith dau 19 and Grandson which I read as Iolan which is a welsh boys name. I have either read it wrong and it is John, or this is not `my' Faith. My ancestor is Faiths brother Benjamin b1835 Trevethin. I am mixed up now ! Regards Gillian

Thankyou Julie. I have a print out of the 1861 census for 104 looks like Bolehall GlascoteTamworth, giving Sarah as head Widow,59 Faith dau.19 and then grandson 7 months which I have read as Iolan, and there is such a welsh boys name . However I accept what you say. It is either not `my' Faith or I have read it wrong. Thank you for taking the time to answer. Regards Gillian

His name wasn't changed to John

His birth was registered before the census was taken, but the 1861 census has his name down as John anyways
