Thank you Chris

I have signed a NRO form to promise I will not publish any of the wills that have been sent to me.
So I cant put an image of the latin will on the roots chat site
I would have to try and work out the spelling of the words and The writing is atrocious, going in columns with lines around blocks of words, and other sentences written in sideways. words crossed out and others added in above etc. its a real mess.
However I will have a look to your suggestion. Thanks.

Many thanks

Chris in Sussex

Chris in Sussex Report 21 Mar 2012 09:00

You could try Rootschat for help with deciphering the Latin will.,425.0.html

I struggle with Latin probate clauses so a whole will would find me a gibbering wreck in a corner! :-D

moonbi Report 21 Mar 2012 00:05

I have transcribed the three John Lyon wills, but not the one in Latin.

Have not been able to afford the fee for the NRO to translate it for me.

I have been able to find out that the will for the John Lion proved 1598 mentions he is a Yoeman.

And the brother Richard Lyon of Weekley Nths was Inst. 1 June 1633 as B.A. Rector of BArnwell St Andrew. Thats when his brother was Vicar of Weekley in 1633. Source "Northamptonshire and Rutland Clergy from 1500." Volume 7-9 by Henry Isham Longden, Joan Wake.

moonbi Report 4 Mar 2012 00:56

I have been looking into the Weekley / Oakley connection.

From Freereg Uk I found their list of parishes
that have the records transcribed.

And the parishes of Weekley, Little Oakley, Geddington, and Newton in the Willows have NOT been transcribed YET.

How should I go about finding these records if they have not been transcribed yet.

Do I have to ask the NRO for another search again ?
or would it be better to ask the Northampton family history society to help look at the documents ?

any suggestions please

moonbi Report 26 Feb 2012 23:35

I am in the process of typing up the wills, ie transcribing them, to save on
paper and computer.
The Lyon of BArnwell one is going to be the hardest to work out as it is will and deposition, very badly scribbled hand writing and also in Latin.

moonbi Report 24 Feb 2012 10:07

24th Feb. the wills of the above have arrived.

Does anyone know how to read LATIN ?
Will of John Lyon made in 1757 and proved 10 April 1760. baker of Cranford St Andrew. has wife Sarah. Owned 3 residences in Cranford St John as well as Koal estates in Cranford St JOhn. Left evrything to his wife.

Will dated 21 MArch 1672 The Rector of BArnwell's wife is Mary /Marie.

Will of The clerk of Little Oakley's wife is Francis.

Will of John Lyon proved 1598 has daughters Mary , and Alyce. Brothers Richard and Robert. mentions wife. Alyce

moonbi Report 6 Feb 2012 22:26

on Feb 5th 2012 I sent to the NRO for three wills of the above

1. John Lyon: 1636 - 1672 Rector of Little Oakley and Barnwell St Andrew

2. John Lyon: 1608 - 1650/51 Vicar of Weekley

moonbi Report 5 Nov 2011 03:21

I have just seen quite a lot of these afore mentioned John Lyon on the Northampton and Rutland Probate Records at Find My Past.

If anyone could help me out I would be very grateful.

moonbi Report 30 Oct 2011 06:46

Elizabeth Lyon second wife of John Lyon died in July 1731 and was buried on the 19 July 1731 at St Peter and St Paul Kettering.

Her maiden name was Elizabeth Cheney
They were married at Harrington Nths in 1707
not yet sure when and where she was born.

moonbi Report 28 Sep 2011 09:37

The will for John Lyon the baker of Kettering
has arrived.

its amazing to cover 2 pages and a Codocil

and 2 pages of an inventory of his possessions and belongings.

it mentions his grandson John; son of his son John.
his young daughters Mary, Anne and Martha
his married daughters Eleanor, Grace, and Elizabeth.

it mentions Goosepasture Lane and WoodCroft which are in Kettering.

it does not mention a wife, so it seems that Elizabeth has predeceased him.

moonbi Report 15 Aug 2011 04:49

John Lyon Married Joan Peach on 06 Nov 1562 in Gretton, NTHS
Father of the below ??

A2 another John Lyon who married Alyce/Agnis and was Yoeman in Weekley.
Died in 1598 in Weekley and was buried on the 20 June 1598.

I cant find a definite marriage for this couple,
but there is a possibility it MAY be John LYne and Alice Kynning who married on the 26 Nov 1684 at Brington Nths.

John's will points to this couple as my link. children Alyce, Agnis, Mary, John.
Brothers Robert and Richard are mentioned in the will too.

John Lyon of Weekley was married in Weekley to Elizabeth Cave on 12 Nov 1602.

John Lyon bap 13 Jul 1608 at St Mary the Virgin Weekley; Vicar of Weekley, and Rector of Barnwell St Andrew. Died 1650/51 and Buried 26 Feb at All Hallows Church wellingborough Nths. Married to Mary....... in 1634 at Weekley Nths

John Lyon b1636 born Weekley, Rector of Little Oakley married Anne Keepe. Died 1672 Newton in the Willows.

John Lyon abt 1670 married Eleanor Baker, a widow.
He was the baker in Kettering who left the will.

John Lyon born 1696 Kettering Nths married Sarah Holmes
he died 1757

moonbi Report 5 Aug 2011 00:06

August 1st 2011

sent search to NRO for a digital copy of the proved will for John Lyon the baker of Kettering 1732/33.

Will is 2 pages
and also
inventory of his possessions upon death 2 pages.

moonbi Report 17 Jul 2011 08:27

now where and when was John the baker born?
my guess is he was born about 1670
so I am using that year as a guide.

suggested parents
John Lyon b 1636 Weekley and Anne Keepe of Ringstead who married 14 Apr 1662 in Denford.

suggested grandparent ancestors
John Lion abt 1604 of Weekley and Mary who married in 1634

suggested great grandparent ancestors
John Lyon abt 1580 , died 1641 and Elizabeth Cave who were married 12 Nov 1602 at St Mary the Virgin Weekley.

possible but debateable!

moonbi Report 17 Jul 2011 08:15

now I see that I should stick with the correct spelling of LYON where ever possible.

John Lyon the baker of Kettering first marriage to Eleanor Baker at Harrington in 1695
Same man second marriage to Elizabeth Cheney at Harrington in 1707.

moonbi Report 15 Jul 2011 07:48

I have received the results of my 2 hour search.
the father of my John Lyon bap 1696 seems to be John Lyon the baker of Kettering and his first wife Eleanor Baker who was a widow when he married her 12 June 1695 at Harrington. Nths. Marriage license bond 10 June 1695.
John went surety to the bond with William Bosworth. Peterborough License bonds.1695

this John the baker died in 1732/33 and a will has been found for him.

I am in the process of digesting the details and deciding what to do next. the will is in poor condition and unable to be photocopied due to a wax seal.

there is a mention of a sister Eleanor to my John who was baptised in 1696.

moonbi Report 13 May 2011 10:58

Two days ago I Sent a request to the Northamptonshire record archivist

asking them if it would be worthwhile searching for the parents of John Lyon about 1694'5, considering that the parish records for Cranford begin at 1695.

Gave them all the details of this man that I know of.

Still trying to confirm his parentage, because Im not sure if William and Ann are his parents.
I hope I get a reply soon

moonbi Report 23 Apr 2011 04:24

I contacted a person who posted on the Geddington Village Message boards. and had a reply. and we have been in touch a few times back and forth with details.

I have been helping with their Lyon family, in hope that I can find a connection with mine.

they mentioned that one family group were quakers, so I have been looking in the nonconformist records on Familysearch. for any BMD
on Lyon with soundex check, and using the dates 1650 - 1720

Big thank you to all who have helped me recently.
