Hi Sylvia. Thankyou for your reply. This all started because I found out on the Marriage Certificate that John Bowler states Yorks Light Infrantry Lance Corparol. So I thought I would find his W.W.1 Records , John Bowler born Nottingham 1888 ---died 1918 killed. So it might be my John Bowler So I will have to find out ??? From Olive

well, I've already given one hypothesis for the children's name
Assuming that the Jack Bowler who died in 1918 is YOURS
IF Adeliza had children after her husband's death but before she married again ............. the children are given his surname because it is now her surname AND he is also named as the father
it's the legal defintiion ....... the husband is deemed the father of any children born of a marriage UNLESS the birth father agrees to be named
If the mother doesn't tell the Registrar that she is a widow (or divorced) ........... then he won't know any difference!

Olive
if Adeliza had a child after John died, but before she re-married, then it would be registered as Bowler, and he would be assumed to be the father.
there are cases where children have been born 10 or more years after the husband died, but still are "assumed" to be his!!
