Could some kind person please check Robert Martin born 1885 Overseas Millitary on the 1911 census please, many thanks

Need some help please, if anyone wouldn't mind looking for a birth 1884/85 Aberdeen to William Martin (Mason)and Sarah Jane Taylor....

I am having trouble tracking him after 1902... i know he was in Manchester, 1901 census him and siblings with Mother Sarah Herbert in Manchester, his brothers army papers say he was NOK and in the Manchester Reg, i can't find any army papers that fit for him for this or WW1 and no information to prove he died in WW1... in 1911 his brother was in Manchester still, his mother and sisters were in Southwark, i can't however find where he was, he doesn't appear to be on the 1911, so any ideas would be greatfully recieved on where to try next, thanks

Scotlands people is free to search.............

Viewing details requires the purchase of units....it is NOT a subscritption site allowing unlimited lookups

Thanks Flick, can't find my login for SP (it wont let me search not logged in, unless i am doing something wrong/) and i don't currently have a bank card, just wondered if anyone who uses it could have checked, i don't need the info just confirmation he was born there, as searches on 1911 show no Roberts born Aberdeen, i even tried searching using Tory where his sister was born, but no luck, and i don't know aberdeen well enough to try to search under other districts for him, Faye

Hi Faye,

I think I am looking at the correct census!
The 1901 census it says Robert was born in Manchester.

Faye, just re-register. You don't need a credit card to register at SP.

If your browser offers you the option, have it save your username and password when you log in then.

You do have to be logged in to search, and it logs you out after a very short time (and you can't stay logged in for next time you go back). So you really should just register again.

A quick free search of the 1911 for

Robert Martin
born 1885 +/- 2 years
place of residence Military

gives 2 Robert-s and 2 Robert Henry-s born 1884-1886 in Overseas Military. None answers to born in Aberdeen or Scotland or Manchester, but you could check them out.

It really helps to post info so people don't have to go hunting for it.

1901

Name: Robert H Martin
Age: 16
Estimated birth year: abt 1885
Relation: Stepson
Gender: Male
Where born: Manchester, Lancashire, England

Civil Parish: South Manchester

Sarah J Herbert 37 - widow, place of birth not known
William H Martin 18 - stepson born Scotland
Robert H Martin 16
Elizabeth A Martin 8 - stepdaughter born Scotland
Ethel Herbert 3 - daughter born Manchester
Grace Taylor 18 - niece "
William Taylor 64 - boarder

So it seems quite specific about where he was born, but it might not be accurate even so, and it does seem odd.

It's confusing about the relationships, though.

Was Sarah actually his mother, having remarried and been widowed?

In any event, this gives you a middle initial: H.

Marriages Dec 1895
Beaty Edith Pyatt Chorlton 8c 1101
> Herbert James Chorlton 8c 1101
> Martin Sarah Jane Chorlton 8c 1101
Mutton James Thomas Chorlton 8c 1101

Thankyou everyone, Sorry only just noticed replies, re registered at SP, tried to use sons card but wouldnt let me, but it does show a robert born in Aberdeen, i am thinking the military ones are going to hopefully show it's him, his sister was born Tory, Aberdenshire according to 1911 but SP shows no birth for her, and his dad died in 1892 in Tory so i know they lived there as his dads family were originally from there.

Janey his mother was Sarah Jane Taylor, she married his dad William, he then died 1892 of TB, and she remarried James Herbert who sadly subsequently died also. I think the H is for Herbert, as Williams birth registration shows no middle name, the initial only shows after his mother remarried, and is not used on any other census.

Thanks Frank, i had no choice but to re register, so have lost my old searches, fortunately i did manage to get Print outs of them, it's because they give you the password and i can't work out how to change it to something i know, i'm useless with these sites, hence why i asked for guidance, i know what i'm doing on ancestry haha.

"I think the H is for Herbert, as Williams birth registration shows no middle name, the initial only shows after his mother remarried, and is not used on any other census"

I think that's probably right. It's common the other way around, if Jane Smith marries John Brown, her kids will often show as Mary S Brown. In this case they were quite possibly using Herbert as their name, but she reported them as their official names.

None of them ever used Herbert as a surname after 1901? (except the one born Herbert, of course!)

If you click "Login Help" at SP, above the sign-in boxes, as long as you know your username ... or even if you don't, as long as you know the email address you first signed up with ... you can get your password (and username) sent to you.

Hopefully you know your old username if you've used the same email address this time. ;)

Thanks Janey i will try that...hopefully i can get my old account back...I would have thought they would be Martin Herbert, but i think the enumerator assumed they weren't hers but her late husbands hence the step son relationship.... William is not registered at birth with a middle name, i have that from SP and his dads DC, his mother kept the name Herbert and his half sister Ethel, but the lads and sister Elizabeth were always Martin, i will get some more credits for the 1911 at the end of the week and check the Roberts with no middle name in the Army Overseas, hopefully one of them is him, just hope it gives their regiment, as you say i checked born Aberdeen, Tory, Scotland, Manchester, and none matched, i thought maybe there were more districts in Aberdeen i could try to search under.

Faye

Faye Report 9 Nov 2010 23:33

Thanks Frank, will give that a try,i don't find SP as easy to navigate as some other sites.

Cathy thankyou, i think that is the one i found earlier but couldn't view as it wouldn't take the card, will try another search under Huntly, you never know, everything is worth a try, as i'm in england i don't know Scotland areas/parishes well to be able to search under different areas.

Deleted again as i seem to be double posting for some strange reason.

Never mind buying credits -- somebody here should be doing that 1911 search! I can't because I don't have a sub, but loads do.

Change your subject line to knock out the SP part (you can always add it back. Just make it say:

1911 lookup please, see page 2

and they'll see what we're looking for details of:

MILITARY MARTIN ROBERT 1886 25 Overseas Military
MILITARY MARTIN ROBERT 1885 26 Overseas Military

Faye

Faye Report 10 Nov 2010 00:40

Thanks Janey will do that, don't like to ask people to spend if i can do it myself, just tried on here threw dads account he has a credit left for 1911 and guess what, it doesn't show the overseas one, i'm inclined to go with the 1885 one myself.

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 10 Nov 2010 00:42

Don't worry about the 1911 -- lots of people here have subscriptions, it's not a matter of spending credits.

SP is about the only place where that comes into play.

If you make that subject change and nobody happens along, I'll drag FannyByGaslight over to do it.

Actually, I'll give that a try now.

Faye

Faye Report 10 Nov 2010 00:46

Thanks again Janey, have changed it in hope.

Thanks Jax, doesn't give me anything to go on,drat, really don't know where to go next to find him, i know from Williams papers in 1902 he was in the Manchester Regiment with him, but then William died in 1917 having been in the Ox &Bucks and WIlts regiments, these army papers however don't survive, but i know it was him as Robert and his mother then Sarah Jane Herbert are listed as NOK in 1902, so Robert too could have changed regiments. Think i'll have to give up the ghost on this one.

Thanks Cathy for those, not sure any of them will tell me anything, think i'll just wait 5 years and hope someone comes along and finds a match to me like they did with Williams wife's brother, my only hope now haha
