Hi Sheila

There is a tree on Ancestry (probably yours) if not worth a look. I chose to look for Rhoda 1881 as the name is a bit less common than George I found her in the Vickers family tree same parents as your details.

Also, I have George's birth Certificate, and the Registrar was his father, Henry Harrison

Thank you all so much, unfortunately none of the George's found seem to be right. My George's parents were Henry and Lydia, he was the youngest of six, the others being Henry, Fred, Meggie, Agnes & Rhoda. He is definitely on the 1911 Census, aged 28. Maybe some mysteries are not meant to be solved !!!

No George Harrison in the CEF with a birthdate anything like right -- the search results show birthdates, fortunately. But Sheila, in case of error, you could go through them checking next of kin and such. That site is free access and easy to use.

Cripes, I did wander off before doing what I was going to do.

The attestation paper for that one of Ginny's has him born Durham, living Illinois, next of kin Elizabeth Ellwood, Frankfort, Illinois, occupation miner, single.

Birth date is specific and not the same, though.

Will look at others ...

... gimme a minute.

Janey, I dont know. All I did was enter known detail into general search and when I saw how many GHs, I went to Military and looked thru the GHs for a likely candidate. Yes, the Pension Record means he survived.

EDIT.....just seen Karen's Post....................Ah well, back to my Transcriptions

Hmmm theres another one

Canada, Soldiers of the First World War, 1914-1918
about George Harrison
Name: George Harrison
Residence: W Frankfort, Illinois, United States of America
Birth Date: 6 Mar 1881
Birth Location: Duham, England
Relative: Elizabeth Ellwood
Relationship: Sister
Regiment Number: 2008951

Does Elizabeth Ellwood mean anything to you?

Edit; Hang on the DOB doesnt match the one you give!

The WW1 record provided by Allan is probably not your George as his age on enlistment in 1911 is 18 years 2 months your George would have been 29

will keep looking

Clever Alan. So a pension record means he survived the war.

... but why does that search at Ancestry -- even just for the name -- get me "Your Search returned no matches"?? It should get me *something*.

Obviously there's some malfunction. Everything I try there

http://search.ancestry.co.uk/search/db.aspx?dbid=1114

gets me nothing.

Anyhow, I was just wondering whether the images would give an indication of whether he was married, etc.

edit - Karen (below) is right -- that's why I was looking at CWGC for people 32+ at date of death ...

He may well have emigrated. My gr-grfather was a railway fireman in Nottinghamshire, and immigrated here to Canada in 1905. There was a boom in railway building in Canada all around that time.

Unfortunately, his name is too common to identify him in outgoing passenger records. Canadian censuses are available onlty to 1911 (1916 for western Canada). US censuses are available for later, but again, identifying him could be next to impossible.

This is him?

Births Dec 1882
Harrison George Weardale 10a 277

No middle name, even. :(

I looked at a few George Harrisons at the CWGC site whose age would match, but none had parents that matched.

http://www.cwgc.org/debt_of_honour.asp?menuid=14#

But there are so many with only initial G / with no date of birth and no next of kin ...

Do you know if he married? Also I take it the parents are William and Mary?

My great uncle George Harrison b. 23/08/1882 in Stanhope, C.Durham, younger brother of my grandfather. He is on each Census from 1889 through to 1911 where he's shown as being a locomotive fireman. I can find no trace of him after that. I found him by chance on the 1889 Census as no living members of the family ever heard him mentioned. He could have been in WW1, but with no regiment to check .................... He could have emigrated, but where to start looking. I have checked Death records but he doesn't appear. Does anyone have any ideas please !
