Hello all. I am in my local library and thought I'd just use the PC for ancestry, (as it's free!).

I'd just like to ask if there is anyone who could look up the Scotland census 1901 for Mary please?...no worries if not I will do it tonight when I get home...if the electricity is back on that is!!

Thanks.

Curious.....On the 1901 census there is a Mary McQuarrie, aged 27, a servant/domestic in Portsmouth, born in Wick in Scotland and after rummaging through the family bits and pieces I have here, some of my Dads scribbles have Wick on them. Sadly looking again on the SP site, still no Mary! She is proving to be very elusive! This gives me even more incentive just to find her!!

Helen, I have just PM'd you.

With regard to being in Ayr, Ayrshire, maybe the boundaries or regions/districts were slightly different then making it difficult to track her down?

K, I hadn't looked that far for Mary. I'm originally from Portsmouth and as most people know it's the home of the Royal Navy. Arthur was in the Navy and if Marys Dad, John, was also a mariner maybe there is also some some connection there. Thanks again.

The trouble with searching on Scotlandspeople is, they only transcribe the name as is has been spelled on the original certificate. Unless you can hit on the exact spelling .....

McQuarrie is one of those awkward names that could be spelled in many different ways. Not easy to find.

I've had a look using all the different variations on the name I can think of ... born in Ayr, Ayrshire ... and can't find Mary.

It seems odd that your Mary is so specific in recording her place of birth as Ayr, Ayrshire .... I would tend to believe her information.

However, as we all know, sometimes people give weird and wonderful info on all sorts of records ... not always accurate.

Thanks Helen...in 'just in case' file. Very slight variation on spelling of McQuarrie.

Reluctant to use remainder of credits on Scotlands People site until I have more definite information. It's Marys birh certificate I need to get.

Thanks again.

Bought credits..besides copies being exceptionally poor quality, I had no luck finding our Mary McQuarrie :-( Not a waste of money though because it might have proved positive eh?!

Hey ho...onward and upward.

Thanks again everyone.

There are 4 matches to Mary's name in the Scotlandspeople site between the years 1876 to 1878. I haven't any credits so can't go further for you. Good luck

K Report 17 Apr 2011 12:55

You need to order through Scotlands People and you may be able to view it online. It is cheaper than the GRO which only has records for England and Wales

Just checked and images of statutory births from 1855 to 1910 are available to view on this site so you should be in luck

Talanya

Talanya Report 17 Apr 2011 12:51

One more question...sorry!...

am I able to order Marys birth certificate from GRO or not, because of it being in Scotland I mean?

Thanks again.

Thank you all.

I'll have a look at the Scotland site. Ann - I'm not sure what I can do with your information actually but I'll file it with Marys stuff, 'just in case'!

Thanks again everyone.
