I have found a snippet on google about my possible ancestor

Insolvent Debtors - 1825

Articles from the London Gazette

INSOLVENT DEBTORS COURT OFFICE,
No. 33, Lincoln's-Inn-Fields.

PETITIONS OF INSOLVENT DEBTORS, to be heard

London Gazette - Issue 18183 published on the 11 October 1825
William Sargent, late of the Parish of Allhallows-on-the-Walls, in the City of Exeter, Joiner.

can anyone tell me -does late of the parish mean-dead? or he used to live there-and how do I find out what happened tp him? I have no idea how old he was. thanks for any help

Hi,

I would think that "late" refers to where he lived and not his death;

"At the Court - House, in the City and County of the city of Exeter, on the 3d day of November 1825, at Ten o'Clock in the Forenoon.
Thomas Steele Perkins, formerly of Stonehouse, Devonshire, and late of Saint Sidwell, in the County of the City of Exeter, Lieutenant in His Majesty's Royal Marines, and also while at the latter place, Accountant, Common-Carrier, and Professor of Music.
William Sargent, late of the Parish of Allhallows-on-the-Walls, in the City of Exeter, Joiner."

thanks-can't find him after that though-and not a burial for him in the local cemeteries or on 1841 census. Hmmmm. Will have to visit west country studies library and check poor records or something- he can't have just disappeared!

The trial Gillian refers to was in 1827, so possibly:

OMG I have just been looking at an old newspaper and William sargent ,joiner of exeter was scentenced to 14 years transportation in 1827 - for theft of materials for making things. not looking good. If it was him-would his wife have gone too-or been left behind?

Familyfinder

Familyfinder Report 20 Oct 2011 20:33

thanks guys you were quicker than me! poor man-guess he was desperate-specially as looks like the same person as already been in debtors prison 2 yeras earlier. Its not looking good!

thanks very much -all I have to do is prove he was Johns father-but no idea how as by 1841 john is married-and obviouslt if this is william-he was long gone away.guessing he would have never got back.

Familyfinder

Familyfinder Report 20 Oct 2011 20:36

sorry if this is a stupid question-but does it show on the transportation where he was born-and when do you know? and also is there any way I can find out if he ever managed to come back?

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 20 Oct 2011 20:39

No, those ones didn't have birthplace but the record I posted shows that place of conviction was "Devon and Hobart". I'm certainly not an expert on these but would guess he was convicted in Devon, England and then some sort of process in Hobart, Tasmania upon arrival.

I doubt his wife would have gone with him. I believe wives were able to follow at their own expense but would that be likely?

There are othe people on here who know a lot more about the transportation process. There's loads of info on Google, too.

thanks very much for all your help.sounds that they all do tie up as there seem to be no other william sargents in exeter until later on- which are johns cousins and nephews. not good makes you feel very lucky!

yes it is the marriage -but i haven't seen it at the parish records-but someone here told me it won't have the father's names-which is a shame!

I wish I knew how I could confirm John's father's name-but I don't see hoe without a birth cert-and obviously it was too early.

some one else has also sent me deytails of another John Sargent born exeter the same time -but with parent John and Mary-st sidwells, exeter in 1803-so not sure now which is mine!
