If you need to order certs then use this website

https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/default.asp

You need to register first and have the details for example

Births Mar 1901
Suddaby Edna
Sculcoates
Vol: 9d Page: 208

This is the official site but beware there are other sites that charge as much as £30 instead of £9.25

Pleased that the names your aunt gave you confirmed what we have found.
If there is any doubt (and there is) it is always best to start buying certificates and slowly working your way back.
So you need the birth certificates and marriage certificates to make sure that everything fits together.

Hi Patchem

the Info you asked about and a seaside town was mentioned earlier which my dad recalls the family coming from a seaside town he thought it was Scarborough though.

Wilfred, Sidney, Arthur, George, William and Ethel.... I've got no birth dates for these family members apart from Wilfred which Im not a certain of but I think 1902 was the year he was born x

Could you post the names that your Father gave you, so we can have a look also? (With any further useful dates, places, if you have them)
Thank-you.

Hi Patchem

I haven't got her birth certificate only what I think is her's that I found in births and the info my father gave me of all her brothers and sister which Im not sure if here got that info right as his memory isn't very good these days.....so my concern with the info my father gave me is that the aunties and uncles name his recalling belong to his father's side of the family.

Peggy

PS Just called my father to get in touch with his sister and brothers because he cant remember her birth date the year 1912 is right.

patchem

patchem Report 11 Dec 2011 10:20

You need to get that birth certificate for her to see what information it holds.

Hi All

thanks to you just going through all the info you have sent me gosh I need to get my head around this so my grandmothers mother was abandoned by her birth parents and then adopted by John and Ann Midgley is that correct

Cheers Peggy

patchem Report 11 Dec 2011 08:38

They have adopted her in 1891:
1891 England Census
Emily H M Arthur Age: 14 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1877
Relation: Daughter
Father's Name: John Midgley Mother's Name: Ann Midgley
Gender: Female Where born: Hull, Yorkshire, England
Civil parish: Holy Trinity Ecclesiastical parish: St Barnabus
Town: Kingston Upon Hull County/Island: Yorkshire
Country: England
Registration district: Hull Sub-registration district: Myton
ED, institution, or vessel: 27 Piece: 3939 Folio: 41
Page Number: 9

John Midgley 65
Ann Midgley 62
Midgley Wild 18
Emily H M Arthur 14
Sarah A Mc Cabe 20

Source Citation: Class: RG12; Piece: 3939; Folio 41; Page 9; GSU roll: 6099049.

Midgeley is a niece in 1881 but a nephew in 1891 (a marine fireman)

This looks like the marriage of John and Ann, so Emily does not appear to be directly related to them, and 'deserted' could be accurate

Have you tried looking for any birth marriages or deaths at Freebmd?

http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl

Also you have been given the 1911 census that shows a couple of children before Edna was born

You will find a couple of others which look likely

Births Sep 1914 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SUDDABY Irene Hopkinson-McArthur Sculcoates 9d 362

Births Jun 1917 (>99%)

I've searched all of the birth certificate with the names my father gave me of all Edna's brothers and sister but when I came across a certificate I thought was the one the mother's maiden name was missing from the certificate.

Thank you

PS that last thread sent by Glitterbaby did Wilfred marry a lady called Louise
