Nicola EDIT trying to get this to fit page - didn't work.

One thing crossed my mind. Maybe Ethel M was visiting her
husband to be who was in Devon at the time and Edith A was
acting as chaperone as would be the thing at the time.

Maybe a Devon hotel or with a relative of Lt Col Botelier.
I love this one.

Well I'm still picking spelling and pronunciation errors here so have been looking under Benton., Boot, Boothe, anything that may seem possible. Its a great long shot and I'm getting no-where so far, but shall keep looking.

I think we should explore all suggestions as look what we have to look forward to when we find them all!!

Interesting middle name. Cousins? Nah, they didn't pop in off the street Nicola.

Neither of them appear to be in the UK on the 1901 census.

Nicola'S Report 22 Mar 2012 11:13

Hello all of you. Thank you for continuing on this one.

Yes, the Burrell's were indeed wealthy but they are in no way related to any branch of our family and so will remain a mystery as to why they were chosen as witnesses to the marriage - particularly since she was married from her elder sister's house in London and it would have been nice to have seen her as a witness wouldn't it?? There were other first cousins and two aunts living in London at the time, all very well-to-do and supportive of this motherless gal - but perhaps the 'scandal' of her marrying a divorce was too much for them and would have given them the vapours!!

Perhaps the groom, who was in the Army, served with Burrell and that is why he was chosen as a witness.

I don't think the nurse is an option; she is too young, wrong birthplace, etc., etc. And Ethel would not have needed to work since she was left a hefty amount by her late father. Nice try, though, and thank you.

Yes, I had already found her in 1911. Living with her retired Colonel RFA husband in Kent with two children, the eldest born in India, and four live in servants.

Yes, I had found her death. In due course, I will send for her Will.

Vera and Maria; I love to read your threads and suggestions. Love the chaperone idea. Keep them coming!

I hope I've covered all bases now on the recent flurry of postings.

Chat again soon.
Nicola

A couple of other thoughts...Francis Wilford Boteler lived in London in the late 1890s at 27 Piccadilly - whether this was a club or not I cannot ascertain. So wondered whether Ethel could have been at his London residence in 1901? After their marriage they lived in Chelsea and had a place in Hampshire where he died...pretty monied!

Also...was Edith at her sister's wedding? Assume Charles gave her away?

This is frustrating but fun! :-)

Mary Report 22 Mar 2012 12:00

Do you have info about brother Arthur in 1901/1911.

Did people often visit their rellies who were abroad in the army?

Wasn't one of Ethel's daughters born in India 1905.

HeyJudeB4Beatles Report 22 Mar 2012 12:19

Hi Mary - I wondered if they might be off visiting their brother. But obviously Ethel was back by October 1901 because she married in London.

Another thought Nicola...Edith might have been convalescing somewhere? She may not have had any live births (as certified in 1911) but that doesn't mean to say she didn't have any other pregnancies?

Just thinking out loud!

On my travels last night sure I found the Burrells
linked possibly by marriage to the Boteler family but
not managed to trace it again.
Daughter of William J Boteler - Ethel Maude -
married into Irby family.

There are trees on Rootsweb.com that have the following names.
Ethel Boothe
Francis Wilford Boteler
Willoughby Burrell.

So there is a connection somewhere, but I haven't as yet found it.
I think it is between Burrell and Boteler surname.

Just a note on visiting relatives and friends whilst serving abroad (in the Army).
Yes, they did as I have read in the book The Asquiths who had four sons serving WW1.

They would even help the wounded etc. as the wealthy felt it their duty to help their family in this dreadful war.

Madmeg Report 22 Mar 2012 23:08

I too have looked for all sorts of permutations of Edith in 1901, including was she registered as Edith Aline, or some other spelling. And I've looked for connetions, as mentioned by Mary, between Burrell, Booth, Law, Denton, Ord and Boteler/Botelier. Nothing.

Ancestry has loads of trees with the Burrell family, but none with any connection with any of the surnames on Nicola's horizon. Maybe Willoughby Burrell was just a friend, or a member of the same Club, as it seems that the rest of the Booth/Denton family were out of town at the time of the marriage.

Very fascinating though.

Edith Aline MUST have been abroad at the time of the 1901 census.

Disappointed that I can't find anything more.

Madmeg, I think that her elder sister must have been resident at their London address at the time of the marriage since younger sister gives elder sister's address on the Marriage Certificate.

Back tomorrow. ;-)
