I'm trying to trace the birthplace and date of my great grandmother Sarah McCracken. I believe she was born in Ireland, lived for a while in Scotland, came back to Ireland for a while and eventually married (Geddes but can't find marriage cert, so perhaps not) and died in Scotland.I have her death notice but can't trace her birth. It was c1826. Her parents were John and Isabella (nee Scott) but without some idea of just where in Ireland (probably North) she was born I don't know where to go now. |

What exactly is the information from Sarah's death registration please? Who was the informant? When and where was her son Alexander born? |

Yes, this is her death information. Her son, Matthew, was the informant. I have traced his marriage and his sister Margaret's but not their births. Their marriage certificates say their mother's maiden name was McCracken so she wasn't married before. However, Sarah was 14 year's Matthew's senior and they could not have been his as he was born in 1839. They were both married under the name of Geddes which leads me to believe Matthew and Sarah were married before 1869/72 when my grandfather was born - again no birth certificate. I have all the references to him after that. |

Thanks Vicci. That's an interesting one I haven't come across before. Although she is too old she may be another branch of the family. |

Not sure if this helps but it may give an idea of area in Ireland if Anthony McCracken is related to Sarah. Had a quick look at his marriage on SP and this seems to be his parents marriage. |

Hello again. I have been tidying up all the paperwork from my research and would like to know if there is a subtle difference between 'married to' and 'widow of'. Does the 'widow of' indicate that they were not married. |

"Married to" usually indicates that the spouse is still alive. "Widow of" or "Widower of" usually indicates that the spouse has pre-deceased the person whose death is being registered. Remember though that the information on ta death entry is only as good as the informant's knowledge. |
