"Married to" usually indicates that the spouse is still alive. "Widow of" or "Widower of" usually indicates that the spouse has pre-deceased the person whose death is being registered. Remember though that the information on ta death entry is only as good as the informant's knowledge.

If you are able to visit the Mitchell Library in Glasgow it may be worth searching the poor relief records. These records are indexed and if Sarah ever claimed poor relief these reords can prove very helpful - especially for Irish ancestors.

Hello again. I have been tidying up all the paperwork from my research and would like to know if there is a subtle difference between 'married to' and 'widow of'. Does the 'widow of' indicate that they were not married.

Janet Report 11 Apr 2012 14:04

Hello rootgatherer. I'll check through the information you gave me.

With regard to the previous post,

Sarah's death cert says 'widow of' Matthew Geddes, Joiner and Journeyman. She died in Glasgow age 64 but to be truthful I have found so many age discrepancies between birth, marriage and death certs that I think they had no idea of their real birth dates. I only assumed she was born 1826 by subtracting her death date. Assuming this is right, she had my grandfather when she was 43/46 (again a discrepancy in grandfather's marriage and death cert)

The 3 children I am aware of are Margaret (Madge) b 1843/7; Matthew b 1846 and Alexander b 1869/72. Haven't found a death for Matthew Snr. He was alive for Matthew Jnr's wedding in 1866 but deceased for Alexander's wedding in 1895.

I did, however, find a William (not John) McCracken and Sarah McCracken (age 15) in the 1841 census in Glasgow. Wrong father's name but right ages. But then again I have found Janet change to Jean change to Jeannie in the course of a lifetime. Makes it very difficult to piece together.

I have traced the Geddes family right back to 1700 except for this generation and I don't like to be beaten :-D

Many thanks again for all your help.

Not sure if this helps but it may give an idea of area in Ireland if Anthony McCracken is related to Sarah. Had a quick look at his marriage on SP and this seems to be his parents marriage.

Janet, can you tell us the names and approximate years of birth for her children please?

So are we saying that she had at least 3 children, Alexander, Margaret and Matthew?

Remember that it ws not uncommon for children from a previous relationship to take the name of their step father. Also, if they were illegitimate they may have given his name as the name of their father when they married.

Have you found a death for Matthew senior please? Was Sarah "married to" or "widow of" Matthew at the time of her death?

What occupation was given for Matthew on the marriage certificates of Sarah's children please?

Thanks Vicci. That's an interesting one I haven't come across before. Although she is too old she may be another branch of the family.

Yes, this is her death information. Her son, Matthew, was the informant. I have traced his marriage and his sister Margaret's but not their births. Their marriage certificates say their mother's maiden name was McCracken so she wasn't married before. However, Sarah was 14 year's Matthew's senior and they could not have been his as he was born in 1839. They were both married under the name of Geddes which leads me to believe Matthew and Sarah were married before 1869/72 when my grandfather was born - again no birth certificate. I have all the references to him after that.

Mike - I have come up against Sarah Rogerson's name before but as she is younger than Matthew and the children's names don't match anything I have, I don't think this is the family I'm looking for.

Thank you both for your research.

I'm trying to trace the birthplace and date of my great grandmother Sarah McCracken. I believe she was born in Ireland, lived for a while in Scotland, came back to Ireland for a while and eventually married (Geddes but can't find marriage cert, so perhaps not) and died in Scotland.I have her death notice but can't trace her birth. It was c1826. Her parents were John and Isabella (nee Scott) but without some idea of just where in Ireland (probably North) she was born I don't know where to go now.

Can anyone help?

Many thanks. Janet
