Hi I'm trying to trace my father's family tree and have mangaged to go back as far as the marriage of Charles and Annie in 1877. at the time of their marriage 18.06.1877 charles was 21 and annie was 18. they had a son on 03.09.1877 named charles edward. they are listed as living in stockton. also from the wedding certificate i have been able to determine that annie's father edward lamb was an innkeeper. i can't find any trace of charles and annie in the 1881 census; nor can i find any trace of their births. can anyone help as i've ground to a halt and been stuck on this for a few months now :-0

Hello Julie, and welcome to the boards.
Have you been able to find them on any census to establish birthplaces?
Do you know of any other children they had? (Sometime we need to come forward in time to be able to work back).

Where was Charles Edward born?
As for the births of his parents - they may simply not have been registered. Until 1875, there weren't any penalties for not registering

There's something not matching up. This railway record has the same birthdate that Julie stated, but I'd say it was the son I found on that 1891 census:
UK, Railway Employment Records, 1833-1963 about Charles Edward Jeffery Name: Charles Edward Jeffery Age: 16 Birth Date: 3 Sep 1877 Residence Date: 20 Jul 1894 Station: Cardiff Company: Great Western Class Number: 264 Piece: 42 Description: Nos.6001-6250 [c.1896-1897] Registers of drivers and firemen, showing date of entering service, promotions, type of work, fines etc.

Marie Celeste is right about something not matching up. I have copies of some birth, marriage & death certificates and have looked at various census. What i know so far: My dad is Edward Colin Jeffery & I have traced all of his brothers & sisters & cousins by his uncle William Conway. dad and his siblings were born in south wales / bristol & ' up north' as he would say by virtue of the fact that their dad was a railway worker. Their father is Charles Trevor Jeffery: born 1906 in Langibby, Pontypool district to parents Charles Edward Jeffery ( a railway fireman) and Lily Ellen Jeffery nee Stephens. i also have a copy of Charles Trevor's death certificate in 1958. I have a copy of Charles Edward & Lily Stephens marriage certificateI which shows charles' occupation still as being a railway worker but his father's name is stated as John jeffery - occupation baker. All the census info i have (1901 & 1911)suggests that Charles Edward was born in stockton, durham. There appears to be family knowledge that his mother was a 'lamb' as i was asked to trace if they are related to the poets. I then find a birth certificate for a charles edward jeffery 1877 in stockton with a mother annie jeffery formerly lamb.fathers name charles jeffery ( builder). but where annie signs she first writes jeffery bu then changes it to jeffrey. the next link appears to be charles and annie's wedding certificate ( which i have a copy of showing them aged 21 and 18 respectively, both living in stocton and dated only 3 months before the birth of charles edward in 1877. on this certificate the name is spelt jeffrey. & they have both had a mark put for their signature. this is where i got the info that annie's dad is edward lamb an innkeeper.
can i ask how did you get hold of railway employye records because i'd like to follow that up for my grandfather charles trevor and great grandfather charles edward. :-D

Ahh ... so Ann Jeffrey is NOT the daughter of William Carruthers... I thought it was odd that the 1881 on familysearch showed a boarder at the head of the household.
Her Father was Edward Lamb in the brewery trade. he'd been missed off.
Thanks Maureen

Hi Mike, Actually I think that's her brother (Edward) on the 1881!
I'm not sure if her parents "split up" - it looks like it from: 1891 census transcription details for: 6, Kenneth Street, Broughton, Salford RG number: RG12 Piece: 3213 Folio: 103 Page: 38 Reg. District: Salford Sub District: Broughton CARRUTHERS, William Head Married M 55 1836 Joiner Cumberland Upper Town CARRUTHERS, Isabella Wife Married F 55 1836 Knock Westmorland LAMB, Edward Son Single M 27 1864 Builders Labourer Kendal Westmorland JAFFREY, Isabella Daughter F 11 1880 Scholar Manchester Lancashire
You need a road map with these people!
:-D :-D
