You have missed the T off twin, I was scratching my head for a bit, sorry.
If their mother was married at the time, they were not illegitimate?
Have you got Edith's exact date of birth?

As Edith Smith is such a common name, what is her exact date of birth?

She is in 3 people's trees on here (including yours) have you contacted the other two?

How do you know that she married? She could have died just after 1911?

From 1969 an exact date of birth is on the death certificate, so you can use this to look without knowing surname. You can then try to relate this to possible marriages.
For example, I tried with Edith born 8th August 1902, and got 8 possible surnames.
You can then look at whether any of those marriages look possible.
If she died before 1969 then you will get too many hits from year of birth.

Have you looked for any contacts on here?

(EDIT - see Gladys' post below, Beatrice is an unlikely lead, so the following will probably not be helpful in trying to find Edith)

Hi, in terms of looking for contacts, I wondered whether Beatrice Harris Smith might be a lead.

She was born Dunstable approx 1891 according to the 1911 posted above, but there are no contacts under that name.

However, she may have been born Beatrice M(aud*)? Harris, since there is this entry for 1901:

Name: Ellen M Smith
Age: 30
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1871
Relation: Head
Gender: Female
Where born: Brightlingsea, Essex, England

Civil parish: Alverstoke
Ecclesiastical parish: Alverstoke St Mary and Anglesey St Mark and Newtown Christchurch

(EDIT - see Gladys' post below, Beatrice is an unlikely lead, so the following will probably not be helpful in trying to find Edith)

This ties up to this birth registration:

Name: Beatrice Maude Harris
Date of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep 1891
Registration district: Luton
Inferred County: Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire

A possible location for Henry James Smith in 1891:

Henry James Smith
born abt 1872 in Lambeth, Surrey, England
Private (soldier)
at St Thomas, Hampshire (Winchester barracks)

Gladys says that Ellen was born 'Wright'.
Perhaps she has already investigated Beatrice?

Added, ?
Marriages Mar 1904
Smith Henry James Wandsworth 1d 629
Wright Ellen Maude Wandsworth 1d 629

So 33 at marriage, so likely to have been married before?

But twins' birth certificates will have her maiden name.
Except they were born before the marriage, so lies all round?

Added:
Wrong marriage?
1911 census says married 15 years

Ivy

Ivy Report 5 Jun 2012 11:29

Thanks Patchem, I agree Gladys may well have already tried this route, but there has been no feedback from Gladys since I first had a look at the thread.

I was just wondering whether Beatrice might be the most likely person to look after Edith after their mother's death.

Certainly I am no further forward (trying either Smith or Harris for Beatrice) for additional contacts to try on the "search trees" on this site. I suppose Beatrice Wright might just be a possibility in that case.

Anyway, I'd better get a few other things done round the house today!

PS Your suggestion about using the exact date of birth to cross-check post 1969 deaths with possible marriages sounds like the best avenue of research at the moment.

Ivy Report 5 Jun 2012 11:36

Oh Patchem, you've tempted me back...

15 years for the length of the relationship is reasonably consistent with the birth of Henry James Smith in Clapham in about 1899 (with the previous child shown on 1901 as May born 1893).

I wonder how the seven children, 1 died is arrived at?

EDIT: but no El*n Williams born in Brightlingsea at the right time, so would need to locate El*n's marriage to a Mr Williams?

patchem

patchem Report 5 Jun 2012 11:39

I think a few certificates are required (but then, I always do).

Ivy

Ivy Report 5 Jun 2012 11:55

Just to add that the marriage in 1904 does tie up reasonably with the ages for the 1911 census:

4 Jan 1904: Henry James Smith age 30 and Ellen Maude Wright aged 32;
2 April 1911: Henry James Smith age 38 and Ellen Maud Smith aged 40.
