Certificates cost £9.25 so a few carefully chosen ones can yield a lot of info.

Oooh i'd disagree with that one - there is lot to be learned from one's family history and i'd say it is very essential to some. I'd almost see it, where you can be sure of historical family structure as a Science.

I can't afford them :-) There has to be a limit on how many you buy and they are very expensive, access to extensive funds shouldn't be the limiting factor in researching your family history.

The John who married Sarah was born Coventry, and is not from the family above, he married Francis J.
But, as before, one of the children's birth certificates will have her maiden name. Have you looked for the marriage on free bmd?

Has anyone got any idea what Matilda's maiden name was before she married Thomas Haycock born 1817 Matilda was born c 1818. They had John, Harriett, Emma, Thomas, Eliza, James etc. The census of course has them down as married so it doesn't come up.

Similarly who did John Haycock born in 1840 marry - It was a "Sarah" born around 1846, they went on to have Caroline, John, Eliza, Ernest etc.

Hello! Yeah, that's them, looking at other known facts they were the Spencers who lived at 60 Leicester Street. Leicester Street these days is where an ugly ring road runs!

Who did John Haycock of 1840 marry?

Thanks for all your help - with some guidance from another published family tree I have been able to confirm the two John's that were causing confusion are both part of the family! There is also a mother and father who nearly all of the children have replicated names of their grandfather - I think they wanted to cause confusion!!

Also who did Thomas Spencer born 1852 marry? and who was Thomas's mother, father and brothers?

oh i was just interested in what the two sets of possibilities are, I now know that both the John's were closely related anyway so if I can find out enough about both i'll be able to work out which one is which...

Certificates can be pricey, I know that sometimes they can be the only way but I avoid purchasing them unless its absolutely necessary...i'm sure you understand...the pursestrings have to stop somewhere :-) So the question at the moment who were the son's and daughters of both of the John Haycocks and who were the parents of both of them :-) I think I can do a little bit more here myself but i'd be glad if any of you can shed a bit of light on both of them as well.

You need the marriage certificate and birth certificate for Vera M Haycock before you jump to any false assumptions.

Only idea is to get the cert as suggested above!
