Another pm from Susan.
This is definitely my gt grandparents and the little girl Jessie was my grandmother. So sorry, but how will I go about buying the marraige cert, I have also joined Scotlands people site and managed to find out a bit more. Thank you so much for your help.
As her MC will only have her father's name on, I would get Jessie's birth certificate instead. This can be ordered from https://www.gro.gov.uk.
Civil Registration event: Birth Print Close Name: HUNTER, Jessie Registration district: Lanchester County: Durham Year of registration: 1904 Quarter of registration: Jul-Aug-Sep Mother's maiden name: Not available before 1911 Q3 Volume no: 10A Page no: 325
I think this is her birth. You can also buy her marriage certificate from the same place.

I agree, get the certificate and there are potentially better/more facts - but this is why I am losing the plot - according to the earlier post from Margee (6 Aug) on another thread Susan referred to information on the certificate - and I thought it was for the marriage between her grandmother and Henry Harkness.
If Thomas and Jessie were married in Croydon in 1898 (perhaps 1/4/1898 or 2/4/1898) then the 13 years would just fit - or they just rounded it up a bit! I can go with the Windsor birth - maybe Thomas in Durham didn't know where he was born on later census returns.

That is really interesting, especially as they were married in 1898, the 1911 says they had been married 13 years. The downside is, I think this is probably Thomas.
England & Wales, FreeBMD Birth Index, 1837-1915 about Thomas Briggs Hunter Name: Thomas Briggs Hunter Date of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep 1873 Registration district: Windsor Inferred County: Berkshire Volume: 2c Page: 413
Susan really needs to get that marriage certificate.

Have rather lost the plot on this, but think that you are looking for your grandmother (Jessie Hunter born in 1905) whose parents are Thomas (b 1875) and Jessie (b 1873). I know that it is out of the Durham area but.......1898 and Maggie Hunter was born in 1898!!!!
If so could this be their marriage: Name: HUNTER, Thomas Briggs
Registration district: [?] Croydon
County: Surrey Year of registration: 1898 Quarter of registration: Apr-May-Jun Spouse's last name Not available before 1912 Volume no: [?] 2A Page no: [?] 634 MarriageFinderâ„¢: [?]
>>>>>>>>>Thomas Briggs Hunter married one of the following people
HAYWARD, Annie Gertrude
.>>>>>>>>>>>WALKER, Jessie Elizabeth
BOND, Alfred James

Received a pm from Susan.
I do feel a bit of a nuisance as I am very new to this. My Gt, grandparents were Thomas and Jessie Hunter, born in Glasgow 1873 and 1875 respectfully. Their boarder was George Henderson from Hamilton. Once again thank you so much its all very interesting to the point of addiction, I just need to learn my way around.

From Susan's new thread:
Susan Report 6 Aug 2012 20:35 I added a post confused about my grandmother, but I put the wrong date in. She was born Jessie Hunter in Co Durham 1905, she married my grandfather Henry Harkness in 1921, Houghton le Spring. On the certificate it states her name as Jessie Hunter OR Briggs. Susan, you did say originally that she was 23 when she married. I presumed from that that you had the marriage certificate. Evidently not. You really need to buy it to get her age and her father's name.

Susan - what children did they have? If you look on FreeBMD it should show her actual maiden name. Was she really only 16 at marriage?

You refer to a marriage licence.............do you mean the marriage cert?
If so..........what is her status?
And who is named as her father?

It just means that she was known by both names. She could have been living with someone else and used his name, or, she could have been illegitimate and one of the names was her birth name and one her stepfather or real father's name which she took on as she was growing up. There are lots of reasons why someone used more than one name.
