I am looking for my Grandfather Ernest edward Allison son of Mary ann Allison( nee Cox) and James Allison. In May 1891 he was regestered at a school in Camden called The Manchester street school. On this record the address is given as 70 Judd street. I can find his mother living in Lewisham in 1891 as a servant. I know the family did later move to Lewisham so think this is her. She is alone with no son or husband . her husband was James Allison a sailor who was later lost at sea - but she is still married on the 1891 census.I have asked for help to find Ernest in 1891 many years ago but he couldn't be found by anyone on here, however I wonder if someone may now be able to trace him ? Another addition to my knowledge is that he was baptised Edward ernest, but it seems always called ernest edward. Anyone able to help with other possible new records? Alice |

Hi - yes I do have him - its just 1891. The mystery surrounds his father James allison who it is said was lost at sea before his mother remarried. trouble is I cannot pin point dad on the census nor find a death so he is a real brick wall! One possibility is that he came from scotland - there is a census with James at sea born scotland that sort of matches but not 100% sure it was him. wish I had just one more piece of evidence to pinpoint him so I could get back further ( I still think he could haave been a bigamist)..... Thank you all for all your help and thoughts. I'm not sure about the death as the dates don't quite fit and Mary Ann his wife had alreadty re-married by then.i do think the 1891 census record could be right though - it's such a shame i'm unable to find him on any other census to confirm his dates etc... Im sure something else will go online soon to help. |

Does anyone know where I could find the records for the James on the 1891- maybe his service record would confirm him as the right person and go on to give the circumstances of his death if he was lost at sea. |

There is this from the national archives site - would match the age of the 1891 James Allison found by Chris: |

Thank you again to everyone for their answers and help. I will try to persue them - just wondering if anyone would know how to look up who lived at 70 Judd street in 1891 - or 8 Pender St Deptford in 1881 . The first is the address given when Edward Ernest enrolled at school, the second the address on james Allison and Mary- ann Coxs' marriage certificate. |

Thank you for this - unfortunately I dont recognise anyone there - but at least i can rule out the possibility of James being mistranscribed ... |

I think these people may also be at number 70. They're on the next page which is damaged and the street numbers are missing. |
