Hi folks....only me :-D

I am working on a friend's tree. I have the above couple marrying in1913 in the Launceston reg district of Cornwall.

There are 2 questions, firstly, does anyone regularly go to the Cornish RO that could do a lookup for me?

... and secondly i'm struggling to find anything on William Jolliffe the husband.

I have everything on the wife Amelia.

Many Thanks

T x

PS.
.....yes Gins, i'm back again from my travels for a while :-P

Without the cert, there is no way of even guessing at when William was born.............unless you know when he died, and can make a deduction

There are several William Jolliffes on 1901 and 1911censuses in Cornwall..........so no way of knowing which could be correct.....and, as you know, guessing isn't advisable

William it appears was a very strange character and very little was known about him, he seemed to drift in and out of the marriage.

All the old school regs here know i'm a certs freak (like the rest of them) however this is a friend's tree, and i'm reluctant to spend any cash right now. This is why i was looking to see if someone was going to the Cornish RO soon?

The Cornish OPC has been a very useful tool upto now, however William appears to keep the anomaly going by not being on the parish records for where i excepted to find him!

As the tree is your friend's, any expenditure should be down to him/her, and would surely be worthwhile to get the facts about him........assuming he was truthful, of course.

Think your friend needs to pay out for at least the marriage cert :-D

WayneTracey Report 17 Sep 2012 14:07

Yeah, we'll probably order the cert over the coming weeks.... it was just an ask that's all.

There are a few conflicting tree's with details on.... and i am very reluctant to take them on 'face value' as the area they come from the name is very common :-\

One day i will get an easy one :-S

According to an undocumented and unsourced tree on ancestry, William Jolliffe was born 1882 Launceston.

A son Leonard is listed, born 1923.

Only 1882 birth I can see seems to be followed by a death straight afterwards.

Shirley~I,m getting the hang of it Report 17 Sep 2012 14:12

well theres this one that fits but its still speculation without knowing his age on the cert. Unless he lied of course!!

Name: William Jolliffe
Date of Registration: Apr-May-Jun 1882
Registration district: Launceston
Inferred County: Cornwall
Volume: 5c

Edit: nope he died as a baby
Name: William Jolliffe
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1882
Date of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec 1882
Age at Death: 0
Registration district: Launceston
Inferred County: Cornwall
Volume: 5c

Well...... i looked at the 1882 one and have spent a lot of time on it... that particular William does not appear on any Census.... and i also believe the child did not survive.

Reggie,

Did you mean Invaluable?

Having just done an open search on William Jolliffe's these are the only William's in Cornwall in 1891.

JOLLIFFE, William 1861 30 M Stratton Cornwall
-->>JOLLIFFE, William 1886 5 M Stratton Cornwall
JOLLIFFE, William 1843 48 M Launceston Cornwall

EDIT:

Add this one too in 1901 :-(

JOLLIFFE, William 1860 41 M Stratton Cornwall
JOLLIFFE, William 1886 15 M Stratton Cornwall
-->>JOLLIFFE, William 1891 10 M Camelford Cornwall

...a second contender :-(

Going to hang fire on a CRO lookup, if that fails then it'll have to be a marriage cert jobbie :-(

The family were/are from the St Clether/Lewannick area of Cornwall and were mostly farm labourers, and the William Jolliffe 1891 was born in St Clether and a farm waggoner.

I need to have a look at naming patterns and try and reduce the options further. The 1886 William was a Mason, and this one is unlikely to be the right man.

Amelia Joliffe was my great great Aunt and a Duance at birth. My mother remembers her boys but not the father. Are you at all interested in the Duance side of things? I find it fascinating that William Jolliffes Mother was Ellen T Duance and then he married her niece Amelia. Not sure whose daughter Ellen was though nor what the T stands for she was born in 1864.
happy to help in any way I can.

kind regards

Ann (Myrtle Ann Williams)
