Not sure it was "their" son as he was born before both marriages.

Can't see an Edwin Wells with father Andrew on census records.

Wonder if John A W was John Andrew Wells Attwood?

Point taken Rose, but either way the name Kendrick has been used so it must be the right marriage - interesting that he would have this name if not Arthur's son though!

My personal thought is that Arthur George Elmes bestowed the name of Kendrick on John Alexander Attwood as a form of acceptance, even though he may not have been his biological father.

It appears his younger brother died in infancy so it may have been his way of perpetuating the Kendrick middle name as he didn't have a natural son of his own.

thank you to everyone who has answered my post and although i find it quite confusing a lot of it is true...yes Brummieja the marriage between eva elmes and frederick Alger is correct this was her second marriage thank you for reminding me,alviegal thank you to for your input all details for the 1911 census are for my nan's familly ,but the boat trip confuses me she would have been a "miss" if still an Attwood and yes her son would have been 1 yrs old but his middle name is definately kendrick...it's a familly name .i can only guess if she was an unmarried mum in those days she may have travelled as a "mrs". i shall now look into finding more about arthur george elmes as this looks promising too although i dont know about the name "WELLS". but again THANK YOU all for your help.i am very new at this and didnt even think about getting my mothers marriage certifcate to check that . :-)

Anne,

There's no birth for a John K Attwood and John was born before the marriage to George Elmes so Kendrick must have been added as a middle name later.

Hello Anne, based on what myself and the others have posted I think Eva's marriage to Frederick Algar was actually her third!

I do wish we could find out more for you about her first marriage.

As I said earlier I think Arthur George Elmes may have passed the name of Kendrick to Eva's son even though he wasn't biologically his.

This thread is old but - better late than never.
If you're reading this Anne I'm your cousin I and think we met way back in the sixties before my family migrated to Australia in '68.
My name is Daniel Elmes, my fathers name was John Kendrick Elmes and my Grandmothers name was Eva Blanche Attwood / Wells / Elmes / Alger and maybe even Gvott. Although my father has dismissed past attempts at discussing it, most of us Elmes kids (6) have been of the understanding that our nan had our father out of wedlock and was shipped off to India. My mother once told me his fathers name was Wells. She also told me that at around 15 years old he was devastated to learn from his dying father (cancer I think) that he was not his biological father - which fits with the above death records of Arthur Elmes. So it appears that my father travelled to india, at the tender age of one, as John Alexander Attwood and returned to England in his early teens as John Kendrick Elmes.
Anne. I think our parents may have been half brother / sister. I have a vague memory of my Aunty Joan (your mum for other readers) being an Elmes but not my dad. And last of all, just to add another layer, my dads nickname during WW 2 was Darky and I have been mistaken for a number of mixed race backgrounds for most of my life. There's photo of me and nana taken in the early sixties in Birmingham. If I can get it up you'll see what I mean.
