It's virtually the same address given on the CWGC record as on the 1911 census record you found Reggie.

It is a sad story either way as he died very soon after Catherine was born and very soon after this second marriage if it is the same person.

Some sad stories and marriage break ups in that period.

I looked at that one..........but it would mean that he was a bigamist............

Son of Thomas and Margaret Prest, of Ripon; husband of *****Elizabeth Prest, of 2, Skellyard, Skellgarths, Ripon.

*******NOT Mary Ellen of Newcastle on Tyne

Which could of course explain the woman remarrying in her maiden name

Message sent to Maureen that her grandfather's death has been found, just in case she wasn't coming back to this thread as she marked it as answered.

This looks like his death:-

PREST, J T

Rank: Private
Service No: 24624
Date of Death: 13/04/1918
Age: 23
Regiment/Service: Machine Gun Corps (Infantry)
49th Bn.

Grave Reference

Cemetery

Additional Information:

Son of Thomas and Margaret Prest, of Ripon; husband of Elizabeth Prest, of 2, Skellyard, Skellgarths, Ripon.

The only thing that doesn't match up is that his wife was called Elizabeth according to this.

Seems he died just a few weeks after your mother was born and they were married for no more than a year. Perhaps because they were married for such a short time his wife felt more comfortable using her maiden name.

You can order his death certificate using the following details (although the death certificate isn't likely to give any more information than the Commonwealth War Graves site information above):-

Name: PREST, John T
Unit: Machine Gun Corps
Rank: Private
Number: 24624
Year: 1918
Volume: M.5

Why have you 'marked as answered'?

Why haven't you given the man's AGE?

And how do you know where he was born?

Wherever Sessay may be,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

ErikaH Report 8 Nov 2012 14:46

Any chance of the info I requested about John?

I'm assuming the woman's age and father's details tallied on both certs?

Maureen

Maureen Report 8 Nov 2012 14:43

Maureen

Maureen Report 8 Nov 2012 14:41

Thanks for your reply,I asked myself same question why she would use maiden

name for 2nd marriage
I have both the certificates issued by Newcastle registrars office,on the the 1940 one marital status declared as spinster.

Born when?

Why would the woman re-marry in her maiden name?

You refer to marriage certs......do you have the actual documents, or do you mean the GRO index?

If you have the actual certs...what is the woman's declared marital status in 1940?

And what was John T's father's name?
