I had the certificate and great grandpa John 's father is listed as Alfred John Thomas deceased, the same as on the first marriage in 1898.
I did trace what happened to his mother and stepfather . sadly they both passed away before he married .

friendlywelshdragon Report 19 Sep 2013 18:23

I contacted Glamorgan Archives and I've found Grandpa John Thomas's first wedding certificate at last. the reason we couldn't trace it is they married in Devon in 1898
I'm sure it's the right one because the ages are right . He was 19 Elizabeth was 18 . her fathers occupation was Coachman ,the same as on the census . Both fathers are deceased.
And what proves it are the witnesses .Catherine Perkins and William Charles Perkins . William Charles Perkins is the name of the notifier on Grandpa John's mother's Margaret's death certificate , He was her brother -in -law. Her sister was Catherine who was his wife.
Grandpa John's father's name is given as Alfred John Thomas. Occupation Gardener.
but the father on his birth certificate was John Huxtable That's another question. Did Grandpa John bend the truth a little , with the name ? Or did the gardener John Huxtable change his name to Thomas? He was still Huxtable when he was 27 in 1881 if that's the right one. If his mother married into the Thomas family at Sutton Farm Landow at some time ( maybe she was unmarried , or maybe a second marriage ),and he did change his name , that would prove the story of the family being from there but it would take a lot more searching to prove that .
I'm pretty sure I've found Grandpa John's second wedding, to Stella May Nicholls in 1933. I've sent for the certificate . It will be interesting to see how his father is listed on that.
Thanks to everyone here for their help. Any more help you can give will be appreciated . <3

On the census transcription for John Huxtable it says St Ardiles , Oxfordshire. I am wondering if there could be a mistake in the transcription , as there is no othter trace of him, and there is a St Andrews in Glamorganshire with Thomas Thomas , and his family

Anoother Update '
I wrote to carmarthen registry office before Christmas . Still haven't heard from them , Phoned them and they sat they have received my cheque and will send certificate when they get to it . They have a long waiting list.
According to my cousin Great-gradads mother was a domestic servant in a big house in Cowbridge .Sutton Farm or Sutton Manor. It's still there . He has been there and spoken to the present owner . and there was a large Thomas family there in the past. I Found the census's
Spoke to relatives in Bristol and the plot thickens .
They say they knew that Great-grandad was registered as John Huxtable and his brother was registered as William Huxtable . The Gardener at the house was a Huxtable and he was paid to say the children were his , but their actual father was one of the Thomas's .Either the head, Edward (who was married of course) or one of the sons . But I cannot find the mother or the gardener listed on the census's for the farm . So where do I go from here . :-S

Still no news of the wedding in Llanelli. but I think it might be the wrong one . I spoke to great-grandad,s nephew and he says the married in Coity ,which is more likely. He went to the church there and was told that some old records were destroyed in a fire. there should be copies in the registry office ,but they can't trace it. :-( :-S

Update. Still waiting to hear about a marrige in Llanelli . It's a good distance but the family did come from there . Thought it might possibly be in a breteren chapel( Gospel Hall ), but found they were only just getting established in 1880s and were not all authorized for weddings. My mother married in Maesteg in 1948 and the chapel here wasn't authorized then.

Hi Vicci . It's the marriage of John Thomas and Elizabeth Richards that I am trying to trace. The 1911 census says the were married 14 years, which would make it 1837 . I got a certificate for that year in Cardiff for a John thomas and Elizabeth Anne Richards , but the dates are too far out . John is 29 and Elizabeth 26 and John's father is Thomas Thomas.and as we know now John's father whould be named as either George Thomas or John Huxtable .

This is the 1911 census

seem to be on the right track with John Thomas b.1879 aka Alfred John Huxtable and Geogre thomas (the younger) being half brothers
their mother being Margaret daughter of John and Elizabeth

Margaret married George Thomas and it seems he took on William Huxstable as his own (he appears with the family in 1891 as William Thomas, but John remained with his grandparents. all living on the same street in 1891 (Nolton st)

can you post all the details of the John Thomas and Elizabeth Richards marriage ? just to re-check

Hello again Only problem with my last post is the ages. All the names fit but on the wedding certificate 1883. George is 28 and Margaret 26
On the 1881 census Margaret is 22
On the 1891 census Margaret is 29 and George is 38

friendlywelshdragon Report 25 Nov 2012 15:40

Hello Vicci
Marriage certificate
First October 1883
George Thomas 28 bachelor General Laborer Oldcastle Bridgend George Thomas (deceased)
Margaret Thomas 26 Spinster Oldcastle Bridgend JohnThomas (deceased)
Witnesses Annie Thomas and Harry Lewis
I have a photocopy and the fathers professions are cut off . Will check later with the granddaughter who gave it to me.

I have the Birth certificate for John Huxtable now . I phoned the regisrar on Friday and it came on Saturday
Fourth February1879. Cowbridge. Alfred John . Boy .John Huxtable. Margaret Thomas. a domestic Servant . Gardener .John Huxtable Father Cowbridge .M.Thomas mother Aber House Port Talbot Registered 18 March 1879 registar William John

I can't find any information on Aber House , but I'm guessing it's a place for unmarried mothers.

If you look back at the 1881 census You will see two grandsons John Huxtable and William H Huxstable both living with their Grandparents
Also daughters Ann ,Margaret and Catherine.

Margaret's age on that census is the same as that on the wedding certificate . Also her father is John ,the witness is Annie, and her sister is Ann
So it looks likely to me that she had the two children with Huxtable then married George. and changed their names to Thomas .

On the 1991 census There is a12 year old John (now)Thomas still living with his grandmother who is now widowed and in a lodging house.
Also Margaret and George Thomas with a10 year old son William Thomas and younger children Margaret 7, George 4,and Charles 2.
It is this young George that I think is the (half)brother of John. that the granddaughter says the wedding certificate is for . It is his parents certificate.

!n 1901 census John is Married to Elizabeth Richards, living in Oldcastle with 1 year old son Frederick , there is George Thomas 14 general farm Servant in Sutton Farm , Llandow Cowbridge
Margaret 17 and William 20 are with their grandmother Betsy 69
But where are their parents.???

Not good at map reading. Llanelly is about 30 miles. Don't know what the roads would have been like in 1896 but will check that record next week. Don't think Bridgend registrar will have those records. Will have to phone Swansea.

Something wrong here ? If George is John's brother (or half-brother) he could not be married to Margaret. I'm still thinking, could he be a step-father who maybe had a son George , who would be John's half brother , but I can't find any records to prove this. Still can't find any other records for William H Huxtable that match his birth date of 1881. The are are a lot of William Thomas but cannot check them out without sending for certificates. Any way I could find the parents without spending money on the wrong ones.

Re birth cetrificate Alfred John Huxtable . John Thomas's second son was named Alfred. Maybe that's why we couldn't find a birth certificate for John Thomas. :-0
