There were a few John Dowlings born around the same time with father name John.

There is a tree on ancestry that has assigned his parents as John Frederick Dowling and Emma Dovey, however I'm not convinced about that as the father's occupation on baptism is coachmaker.

Well Peter, my theory is that John Dowling the paper-stainer was living with Sarah Frost for some time (as per the 1871) and they had John Frost in 1869. John Frost later started to use his father's surname of Dowling.

Just go off and digest it all then come back with any questions you may have.
