Thankyou for looking Chris. I've seen that entry for Henry in the Australia Death Index but on the Death Certificate there is no mention of Henry's father. The J. Smith is his son who is the informant on the Death Certificate.

Briony - your opening post has changed from the original and really doesn't make sense of why the information was posted that followed it then.
It still looks as though your last post was 00.51 on 18th Jan and that searching to help you is perhaps concluded. It might have been better to explain yourself again in order on the thread to bring the whole thing back up the board and leave the original opener.

??? Having said that there are 2 Henry (no middle name) Smith's showing on the 1851 census who were Sawyers b 1835 +/- 2 years (as per Marriage occupation in your new opening post)
b 1835 RD Dursley Gloucestershire - with family in Nymphsfield. This is about 4 miles from Stroud and 5-6 miles from Tetbury.
b1834 RD Ledbury, Herefordshire - a Lodger with the Greenaway family b Ledbury. He shows up in 1861 in Worcester.

I can't find Henry Smith for definite in the 1861 census (nor his brother John, but have seen the rest of the family). There are several Henry Smith deaths Dursley RD 1851-1861, so no certainty there. Will put 1851 census as next post on thread

Thanks both of you for your information. I started a new thread Stuart to try and approach my research from a different angle, seemed a good idea to me at the time but I didn't realise the confusion it would cause, so sorry to everyone.

Chris, thankyou for taking the time to look up information on Mary Amber, but my Mary came to South Australia in 1847 with her parents Stephen Amber and Eliza Swanborough.
Stuart, your information on Henry Smith, sawyer from Gloucestershire looks very interesting and gives me another lead to follow.
