Shirley~I,m getting the hang of it Report 14 May 2013 19:58

You get certs from www.gro.gov.uk cost £9.25 each with the GRO ref.

You have to register on the site ,free, then follow the order form , you only need to specify what type of cert you want the name and the GRO ref where asked . You must tick the box that asks if the GRO is known .
In the case of a marriage cert you only need to put one of the parties names. Put the info in as its quoted on the ref even if its misspelt

You started by asking for James born 1878.
However, on both the 1901 and 1911 censuses that have been posted by Shirley he is born 1872/1873.
Do you know which date (1878 or 1872) is more accurate?

Thank you all so much for guiding me in the right direction, One thing i know for sure is my James is not from Wigan or Leeds as I been able to follow them both up to 1911 where they are both in their respective places. I am looking at the post from Dea, with the spelling of Tarphe, this looks promising.

Thanks Marie. I just wanted to check before you started spending money on certificates that you had made sure that James was the right one as there are one or two around.

Do you know if your James (1910) had any brothers or sisters born from mid 1911 onwards? If he did that might be an easy way of checking his mother's maiden name as the maiden name was recorded on the birth index from then on.

You said somewhere I think that you found your ggdad had 7 siblings and only 5 are showing on 1911.

I really think that is the only possible birth cert for 'your' james - this is the GRO reference if you are going to order it:

Births Sep 1872
Tarphe James Chorlton 8c 598

Other than that birth reg there is no other reference to the name Tarphe anywhere at any time that I can find!!

...........

Another very useful site you might want to explore if researching in lancashire is:

http://www.lan-opc.org.uk/Search/indexp.html

There wasn't much on there, however, about this particular family but I did find this baptism record for one of James and Mary's daughters - Sarah:

Baptism: 15 Mar 1903 St William, Manchester, Lancashire, England
Sara Helena Tarpey - filia Jacobi Tarpey & Mariae Helenae (formerly Traynor)
Born: 18 Feb 1903
Abode: 34 Angel St.
Godparents: Jacobo Cronshaw; Sara Traynor
Baptised by: Jacobo Corkery

Once again thank you all so much, this is certainly a very steep learning curve. I found my gdads other siblings through F/B. This is how I got started as I was so shocked to learn this. I only ever knew him and I only heard of his brother John because of his boxing career.
I too found the listing for James in Chorlton. this too looks promising.

I am certainly getting HOOKED on this.

Sorry Marie, - It can't be that one (James Turpie) as he is on 1901 with new wife and 4 children, still in Bolton, same occupation and his birth shows in Dec. 1869 in Manchester as 'Turpie' .

is this your James death

Deaths Sep 1946 (>99%)
Tarpey James 72 Manchester 10e 273

There is a probate index record for James Tarpey of 32 Colllyhurst St Manchester who died 1 Jul 1946 which gives probate to James Tarpey motor driver

It is exciting when you find something that you think fits. I am sure you will get there with this. You are posting like you have been doing this for years!

Hi Ann, yes this is him, my gparents lived in this house when I was little, I just about remember it. What does 'probate index' mean? I have been doing this for about 2 weeks now, it feels like I've been doing it for years though. driving my other-half mad.

Not that quick I, afraid. You will be checking the post every day now and be disappointed when no letter. They take about a week to be despatched.

If you had London relations the some parish record copies of marriages are online which is lovely cos you can view the actual cert and download it, and if the persons could write then you would see their actual signatures.

probate - if someone leaves a will it has to go to 'probate' for validation. the probate is given to the executors named on the will who are then legally able to carry out the bequests specified in the will.

You can apply for a copy from the probate office (google should find you all the details if you want to do that) I think at the moment it takes several weeks to arrive. Postal both to apply and receive.

It's frustrating having to wait for things to arrive especially at first when you are keen to get on (I've been driving my OH mad for years and it was his family I was concentrating on!). The only consolation is that the dat and people are going no-where and as more goes on line you might find what you want next is there. I know I trawled micro-film parish registers for baptisms etc - now I can find them on line in a few minutes. Lancashire is a great county for info on-line.
