So I think that Elizabeth nee Boulton was the mother of James Fortune's children, and that she had previously been in a relationship or marriage with George Hemmingway, and that though she reverted to using her maiden name of Boulton/Bolton, after the relationship with George ended for whatever reason, when she finally married James Fortune it was under the name of Elizabeth Hemmingway.

I think this might be Elizabeth as a married woman in census 1881, which may be why she couldn't marry James for so long.

However I can't find a Boulton/Bolton - Hemingway marriage yet.

My gut feeling is that Elizabeth Hemmingway and Elizabeth Bolton are the same woman, but I don't know why the two surnames.

Interestingly, in 1891 James is said to be married but boarding with an Elizabeth Hemmington.

Is it just co-incidence that Elizabeth Hemmington's son Charles H, is the same age as the Charles H Hemingway boarding with James Fortune and housekeeper Elizabeth Bolton in 1901?

EDIT It looks more like Hemingway than Hemmington on the 1891 image.

EDIT: Maybe just coincidence, but Elizabeth Bolton and Elizabeth Hemmington/Hemmingway are of an age, and both are born in Staffordshire, possibly the same place, as the 'But Lanc' on the 1911 for Elizabeth Bolton looks more like B??? Lane on the image, whichcould tally with the Bull Lane given for Elizabeth Hemmington/Hemmingway in census 1891. Are the two Elizabeths the same person? If so, why the two surnames?

As someone already posted earlier in this thread, the children living with James in this census, are likely to be the offspring of his' single' housekeeper, and are listed under her surname of Bolton.

Note that in the 1901 census all four 'Bolton' children have the middle initial 'F', could that stand for 'Fortune', ie as surmised previously by others, James had at least four children by his housekeeper Sarah Bolton?
