Can anyone help with finding death for my great grandmother Sarah Bowles nee Sillence. She was born 1860 and the last record of her is 1901 cencus living Shirley Southampton.
Her husband my great grandfather died 1929 and she is not buried with him.
The 1911 cencus shows nothing for Sarah.
Thanks for looking

Reggie Report 13 Sep 2013 09:31

Have you looked for info using freebmd?

Was her husband described as a widower on 1911 census?

Reggie Report 13 Sep 2013 09:36

Please post 1901 for info....................

Who was her husband?

Where was Sarah born?

Flip Report 13 Sep 2013 10:38

Lesley, have you found Henry in 1911 - I can't see either of them?

Tenerife Sun

Tenerife Sun Report 13 Sep 2013 10:43

Not at 9 Clarendon Road, Shirley in 1911. Can't see death.

Reggie Report 13 Sep 2013 11:02

Who registered this death?

Deaths Dec 1929 (>99%)
Bowles Henry 71 Southampton 2c 70

Lesley Report 13 Sep 2013 11:16

Henry Bowles was not on 1901 or 1911 cencus, as probably at sea. I have checked and trawled all modes of research. I have been to Winchester records office and Southampton library. I do not have Henry's death certificate so I might send for that to see if it will help.
I have been trying for years now so I would like to try and resolve this.

Reggie Report 13 Sep 2013 11:20

Clutching at straws..............looking at 1911 for Sarah born Chilbolton 1863 +/- 2yrs

1911 census

Your search has returned 3 results.

Search criteria used:

First name(s): sarah Year of Birth: 1863, plus or minus 2 years Birth place: Chilbolton Searching within: Households, Institutions, Vessels

Household SIMMONDS, Sarah 1863 48 F Burnley Lancashire VIEW VIEW
Household SMITH, Sarah 1864 47 F Winchester Hampshire VIEW VIEW
Household THEOBALD, Sarah 1861 50 F Medway Kent VIEW

The first one seems odd..............check the image - see what you think.

The other two can be discounted completely

Flip Report 13 Sep 2013 11:54

Strange one Reggie, married 3 years & 3 children born & still alive. It's a possibility but I can't see a Simmonds/Bowles marriage.

As you say, other 2 can be ruled out they are on 1901 - but the only other Sarah born Chilbolton is Bowles?? Very odd

How sure are you that Henry died in 1929, as you don't have the death cert?

Lesley Report 13 Sep 2013 15:55

Henry Bowles buried 23/10/1929 age 71 years, found grave Hollybrook Cemetery, in 2009.
I have not been able to find a remarriage for Sarah. By 1911 her 3 children including my grandmother were married and lived elsewhere. Sarah not being on a cencus with them.
My grandmother Florence died 1924, very young. I have a photo of her with Sarah I would think taken about 1910, but thats only a guess.

Flip Report 13 Sep 2013 16:08

So you have found the grave, but how are you sure this is for your great grandfather?

Flip Report 14 Sep 2013 08:48

Wonder if someone could do an address search in 1901 - Forest Villa, Nelson, Lancs - it's on FMP under "other establishments". According to 1911 census the householder was Mr Wilkinson (not present)

Reggie Report 14 Sep 2013 09:20

If you don't have the death cert, how do you know the grave is for the right man?

Not doubting you - but need to know what proof you have.

Flip Report 14 Sep 2013 09:28

Thanks Reggie, no good it's a different house.

That 1911 census you found for Sarah Simmonds - the householder although not present signed as L Wilkinson, address Forest House, the enumerator's summary shows it as Forest View - and Forest Villa was the nearest I could find in 1901. It was just a long shot to see if there was a Mr Simmonds, maybe a servant/butler.

Sorry, just realised it was Dea who posted the address - many thanks

Reggie Report 14 Sep 2013 09:31

That 1911 census in Burnley doesn't ring true

..........the woman was completely on her own.......and claimed, at the age of 48, to have been married for 3 years, during which time, she had produced 3 children.....still alive. So - where were they?

This is all there is on the record..................

1911 census

Person: SIMMONDS, Sarah Address: Forest View Nelson

SIMMONDS, Sarah Servant Married F 48 1863 Domestic Servant Chilbolton Hants

It's a 10-roomed house..............

How many children did Sarah have with Henry? Was it three?
