Could you please help me to find Joseph Zoumie Shields who married Ann Broadhurst at Ormsskirk in 1880 after that he seems to have dissappeared of the earth.

MarieCeleste Report 4 Oct 2013 21:10

Hello Ena, when and where was he born?

Have you found Ann on any later census? When and where was she born?

Also, do you have his middle name of Zoumie on any other record, or just that marriage?

Do you know of any children to Ann and Joseph, or who she subsequently married?

His Father's name from the marriage certificate would also be useful.

Ena Report 5 Oct 2013 16:50

hello folks iam new to this so bear with me
i know where Ann has been al the time as she had numerous children with John William Kirk these are my husbands Father and siblings On the census's after 1891 she is with john and her family and she is down as his wife .I can find know record of a divorce but just after she married Joseph Zoumie childs he appears in prison at Walton in Liverpool do you think perhaps she could'nt marry John W kirk as she was still legally married to J zZ Shields

Joseph married Ann in St Cuthberts Church Nth Meols..unfortunately the Registers for the time in question dont seem to be avaliable

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 5 Oct 2013 19:52

Hello Ena, your assumption that Ann couldn't marry John W Kirk because she was still legally married is highly likely correct. Divorce was extremely rare for ordinary people (which was why there was so much bigamy).

You really need to give us some of the info we've asked for so we can try to find out what happened to Joseph.

Have you actually got the marriage certificate from 1880? If so, can you give us his age, occupation and name and occupation of his father? (If you haven't got it, it would be well worth buying).

When and where was Joseph born? You mention he was in prison soon after marriage -was this on the 1881 census?

Eringobragh1916 Report 5 Oct 2013 20:00

Ena....Where have you found the "Zoumie" part of his name...on what document..?
It may be the "Z" was a "T" therefore making it Toumie (or variation) eg Tommy

Cant find him in Walton Goal 1881

Walton Gaol H M Prison, Hornby Road, Walton-On-The-Hill, Lancashire, England
List of Staff and Prisoners, 1881

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 6 Oct 2013 16:59

"Zoumie" is on the GRO Index re his marriage - as already posted by Shirley:

Marriages Dec 1880 (>99%)
Broadhurst Ann Ormskirk 8b 1146
Shields Joseph Zoumie Ormskirk 8b 1146

But it may have been mistranscribed by the clerk who typed the GRO list.

You really need to buy the marriage cert to find out any more - age, parents' names, and whether or not "Zoumie" is correct.

pm received from Ena

"I only have him on his marriage lines I think he went to prison in Liverpool
he must have done something really wrong as Ann is with John william Kirk after 1881 and though I can find no marriage for them they had George , james Edward, Sarah Ann , Eliza, Edith,_Walter William, they all have Ann |Kirk nee Broadhurst on their birth certificates. She died named Ann Kirk1904 in Salford. I find this strange what do you think
Ena"

(Have asked for replies on here).

MarieCeleste Report 21 Dec 2013 10:30

Ena, when you say you only have him on his marriage lines - do you actually have the certificate? If so, what information does it give about him - his age, occupation, where he lived? What does it say about his father?

The LancsBMD record of the marriage doesn't give a middle name for him:

Surname Forename(s) Surname Forename(s) Church / Register Office Registers At Reference
SHIELDS Joseph BROADHURST Ann North Meols St Cuthbert North Sefton C9/3/60
