Yes Potty....agree totally :-) I do think the two Alfred's in the censuses are one and the same....the Lord is too much of a coincidence. I am just not sure the New York travel is him (think it's probably the other Alfred the photographer)...but of course none of it answers any of the questions we are all now champing at the bit to answer :-)

Amanda,

I like Jude's conspiracy theory!

I think she is on to something here, I would take a guess that Alfred, who can't continue in his trade as a Photographer because Harry Clare is there, is either given or helped to find employment by his brother Percy Maybury who by 1911 was a Butchers Supplier And Outfitter, whatever that is!

I can't see the Passenger List for Percy but he is listed twice on Ellis Island and I can't find my password to see the details!

Kind regards
Amanda

Well here is one question at least half-answered...from the London Gazette March 26th 1907

Notice is hereby given that the partnership heretofore subsisting between the undersigned, Alfred Edward Maybury and Edward Napier Reynolds carrying on business as Photographers at 126A Bold Street in the city of Liverpool and at Station Road Wigan and 52 Cross Street Manchester all in the county of Lancaster under the style or name of "Benson" has been dissolved by mutual consent as from the 21st March 1907. All debts due to and owing by the said late firm will be received and paid by the said Alfred Edward Maybury

Hi Jude,

Very well done!

He has to be the one going to New York in 1907, it all matches up with his date and place of birth, now all we need to do if find him coming back in time for the 1911.

I can't see a wife with him but I do have the image if anyone wants it?

I guess Sidney was placed in a school?

Kind regards
Amanda

Edited as I do have the image but it is not as I would have liked it to be!

Just a total trivial post.

HM Queen Elizabeth is known to her family as Lilibet...do you think this is why Elizabeth became Lily?

Jude

Potty

Potty Report 2 Dec 2013 11:41

The Elizabeth/Lily name change had occurred to me to, Jude. There does seem to have been a bit of an upheaval in Alfred's life around 1907.

HeyJudeB4Beatles

HeyJudeB4Beatles Report 2 Dec 2013 17:19

What I find strange is that obviously some sort of schism happened around 1907...eldest son Alfred seems to have stayed with mum, middle son Sidney seems to have stayed with dad. But what of the youngest son, Frederick? He was with his grandparents immediately after it seems but must have got back with his mum at some point because, like Alfred, he has taken Harry's name (and so I assume came to see him as his father).

Potty Report 3 Dec 2013 11:29

Agree, Jude but although they adopted the Clare name, they kept the Maybury. Elizabeth/Lilian's death was registered under both and registered under Elizabeth not Lilian, so presumably her sons knew she was Elizabeth, so why Lily on the baptism?:

Margaret Report 3 Dec 2013 14:31

Slightly digressing from the Maybury/Clare side of the family, I MAY have gleaned information on the John Conolly and wife Anne situation. There is a marriage of John Conolly and Anne CORNEILLE 1855 Kilmallock, Limerick and the birth of several children. Have noted it and will bear it in mind. Seeing my friend this Thursday for a couple of hours and sincerely hope she has some information or a tiny snippet which would help sort this lot out.

I agree that it appears that Frederick also returned to Mum at some point and was therefore, like Alfred, more or less brought up by Harry Clare. Referring back to the possibility of Elizabeth being 'Lilibet' could Harry have maybe even called her Lily thus shortening Lilbet a bit more - you know, like a pet name ? If the two boys heard her being called Lily perhaps that's why those two names appeared on the baptism. Just a thought - clutching at straws really !!!

HeyJudeB4Beatles

HeyJudeB4Beatles Report 3 Dec 2013 17:30

Margaret - that's exactly what I was getting at :-) And of course on the baptism in 1929 Alfred was 31 years old and had probably grown up hearing Harry refer to her as Lily. By the time of her death in 1952 maybe she had come clean?

Do let us know if you glean any little snippet!

Jude
