I'm trying to find what happened to Charles Reginald Humphrey who has vanished sometime around 1906. Here is what I know about him.
He was born 1870 in Grafton Regis, Northamptonshire, the son of Samuel Humphrey and Elizabeth (unknown). He married Emma Laura Abbs on 11 Dec 1901 in Erpingham, Norfolk.and his occupation was a butler. Charles and Emma had a child Muriel Howard Humphrey born 13 Feb 1906 in Melcombe Regis, Dorset. A second child Joan Anna Humphrey was born 8 Nov 1912 in North Hammersmith London , and Charles occupation is a Domestic Valet - however family information suggests that Charles was not the father of Joan although he is on the birth record.
I've searched in vain on the 1911 census to find either Charles (on his own) or Emma with her daughter Muriel.
Muriel went on the marry Stuart Tennant Lyle and were the parents of my friend Howard Tennant Lyle born 01 Aug 1935 in Sutton Coldfield, West Midlands.
I'm wondering if Charles Reginald Humphrey left the country and was on any shipping lists around 1906 -1912.
I would also be interested in anything uncovered on the 1911 census
Thank you for your help
Tom

Hi GlitterBaby
The daughter Muriel married 04 Sep 1934 in Acton, Brentwood, Middlesex.
Emma died 01 Feb 1927 in Middlesex, England so not a witness
Charles also recorded as deceased
Emma Laura Abbs had a second marriage to John H Mockridge (a solicitor) on
01 Jul 1925 in Brentford, Middlesex. where she is recorded as a widow. Again, the family are nor entirely sure if this was true.

So that might explain the possible listing on electoral registers for 1925 in Harrow for Emma

Potty

Potty Report 28 Nov 2013 12:49

His birth and marriage were not registered under Humphrey:

Just realised that cannot be his birth - not finding one for 1870, though.

Samuel Humphrey is recorded as an Estate Agent on the marriage certificate of son Charles Reginald

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-266-11000-55953-38?cc=1416598&wc=MMVP-49M:897596066

Marriage cert gives Charles Reginald's abode as Gamblingay Cambridgeshire
so 1901 cenus that Potty posted looks promising

Thank you "all" for taking the trouble to reply to my enquiry.

I would really like to know if anybody can find Charles Reginald Humphry on any shipping records leaving the country around 1906 - 1912.

Also can anybody find Emma Laura Humphry with her daughter Muriel on the 1911 Census.

Adelaide Report 27 Jul 2015 16:26

WELL! Hello everyone. I didn't know this place existed. How wonderful!
So - Blue/Tom, (me) being the granddaughter of Emma Laura here is what I know.

Emma married Charles Reginald Humphry in 1901 - I have the marriage certificate & yes his father is listed as Samuel - estate agent.
But note the spelling in this and in the 1901 Gamlingay census.

My Aunt Muriel was born in 1906. Look on the Jolley Family Tree and I believe there is a pic there of Emma & Muriel that I presume is Muriel's christening.

Charles seems to have been absent or in and out of Emma's life from thereon.

In fact Muriel's birth in Weymouth raises my suspicions (regarding parentage) as Emma seemed to live in London (near her brother & Anna Maria and JH Mockridge?) and went to Weymouth - where I believe her sister Ruth lived - to have Muriel.
That aside, when Charles was 'there', he and Emma were always tiddly - or drinking when John Humphreys Mockridge visited them (Mockridge lived in Ealing and visited often). My father implied that Emma lived near Mockridge - or near enough for Mockridge to visit often - and that WHEN Humphry was there - there was always drinking going on.

Joan - is a bit of a mystery - her father was supposed to be a Somebody Walker - or Wilkinson. This man was madly in love with Emma and begged her to go to the US with him and start a new life there.
Emma must have been seriously considering this because when Mockridge found out - he sobbed and wept etc told her he'd always loved her and pleaded with her not to go. He promised to look after her. He was already paying for Muriel's schooling I believe).
So - after having Joan Emma then had two more children by Mockridge - Peggy & my father Howard.
Of course there was a huge scandal - Anna Maria divorced him, and the 2 children of that marriage never spoke to him again I believe.

.....Historical True Anecdote....
When my father Howard was a baby, and Muriel was holding him, there was a knock at the door. When Muriel answered it, it was Humphry standing there.
Humphry said, "Who's baby is that?"
Muriel said, "It's mother's."
Muriel says Humphry's face 'went all dark', and he turned and stomped back down the path and slammed the gate after him.
THEY NEVER SAW HIM AGAIN.

So, Humphry marries Emma in 1901 - fact.
Muriel is born just over 4 years later.
She gives birth in 1912, 1914, & 1916 - WITHOUT Humphry's knowledge?
HUH?

Incidentally when Emma died (alcoholism), Mockridge took my father to the funeral home and sobbed over her body every day until she was buried. Then Mockridge would take my father to the grave in Ealing several times a week and do the same over the grave.

So - although I can't tell you what happened to the mysterious Charles Reginald Humphry - I know he visited Emma (or attempted to) in 1916.

Once - a long time ago, I spotted a name on ancestry regarding a Charles Humphr/e/y with about 13 aliases - various spellings for 'Humphrey', and Charles/Chas/Reggie etc as well. Sadly I was too green a member of ancestry to copy n paste the url.....

Oh - yes there are shipping records that give a Chas Humphreys/Humphries etc going to both USA & Canada.
I haven't bothered with them as I couldn't be sure this was Emma's husband.

Welcome to the boards Adelaide. In the early years if probably took a number of us time to find the them on this site and post.

Tom/Blue started this thread a couple of years ago. it would be lovely to think that he still keeps an eye on it, and that his friend on whose behalf he was asking, is still interested.

If you were interested, you could click on his name to send a message off-board. As long as he still has the same registered e-mail address, GR will notify him that you are trying to make contact.
