Sorry a bit confused here.

You now say that he was born c.1888 so why were we looking for a marriage between 1896-1910? He would only have been 8yrs old in 1896 so that wouldn't have been possible.

What were the details on the marriage certificate to Mary Ann Lennon?
What did he give as his age and his occupation?

Does your friend have the death cert to see who registered the death?

If, as you believe, he died in the area where his 'first' wife was living, maybe they got together again after he left Mary Ann and the children, in which case, she may be mentioned on that cert?

Men born abt. 1889 always make me think about WW1 especially when they have had broken marriages. A lot of men who married prior to the war never went home after it was finished and made another life elsewhere (due to trauma etc.)
So I was wondering about this one:-

British Army WWI Pension Records 1914-1920 about Hugh Leonard
Name: Hugh Leonard
Estimated birth year: abt 1887
Age at enlistment: 23
Residence: 93 Old Lancaster Lane, Preston, Lancs (address going back to)
Document Year: 1910
Regimental Number: 19721
Regiment Name: South Wales Borderers
Number of Images: 6
Discharged on:- 17th July 1915 (unfit for service)

.............born abt. correct time in Lancashire but with connection to Wales?

EDIT:- Noted as being single, so maybe not???

I am very curious about this one !

I know his year of birth is wrong and he was in fact born in Jersey!

BUT he is in Llanelli and his wife was born in Manchester.

She also died in the Manchester area so she may have returned there after he left her?

The 'visitors' on there 'may' be his parents?

It is just a 'feeling' at the moment but I will work on it.........

Having looked at the image, the visitors ARE his parents and he was their only child. They were married on 9th May 1879 and Hubert was their only child.

Hubert married Gertude on 13th June 1902 but I have not found the marriage as yet.

Thinking about it, if Hubert lied about already being married when he 'married' for the second time, he could well have also lied about his age or where he came from ?

Does she have the 1919 marriage cert, if so this could be very useful as we could compare his signature on that to the one on this 1911 census form !!!! ;-)

It would also be useful for us to have all the other details from that marriage cert.

Thanks for the 1911 Census :-)

That tree on Ancestry is obviously flawed because they certainly have the wrong marriage !

Ms Palmer actually married a John Anglin:

The 1912 birth for a George H Leonard states mothers maiden name was Palmer, think that marriage in 1902 was correct and Amelia/Gertrude left John Anglin and was with Hubert Leonard in 1911, hence why he may have told a lie about his age.

Hubert may not have been born with the Leonard surname???
