Onslow was my Gt Grandfather. He was born 1852 in Edinburgh. He married Elizabeth Elkington 19 05 1876 at St Lukes Chelsea but can't find a death certificate for him. We think he died before August 1899 and most likely in the London area. He was a musician.

Have you looked for a death for him using variants?

Jennifer

Jennifer Report 25 Mar 2014 16:11

Hello Reggie
Thanks for all that info. He must have only been about 47 when he died. I have looked under all his first names with no luck

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 25 Mar 2014 16:19

It could be, of course, that he died somewhere other than England/Wales

Quite a bit on here, more particularly about his father who had a long and looks like distinguished military career as musician/bandsman

http://www.british-genealogy.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-38835.html

It would seem they were a military family and I just wonder if Onslow (on the census as Henry) in 1881 is there as a Corporal in the Guards, maybe he was still serving 1891 (when he is listed as Musician) and onwards and that he died overseas? Or he could be a civilian and be overseas of course.

Maud Jane is also on the baptism record that Gins found - born April 18th 1889. I was looking to see what his occupation was at that time. It gives musician.

Looks like there was an earlier Elizabeth born to Onslow where he is listed as Musician 2nd Life Guards. I can't for sure say, that the record actually does read Pomet for her 3rd given name but whatever it is may be a throw back to an ancestors name

London, England, Births and Baptisms, 1813-1906 about Elizabeth Jane Pomet Clarke

Record Type: Baptism
Baptism Date: 7 Dec 1877
Father's Name: Onslow Charles Henry Clarke
Mother's name: Elizabeth Clarke

EDIT - my thoughts are now that it will say Power, Onslow's fathers middle name.

John Power Clarke was Onslow's father - see the post I made earlier - there has to be a connection!

There is a Herbert Onslow Clarke b 1846, father William b 1813 a Solicitor on the 1851 census in Islington and looks like Herbert's daughter Liian's christening 1872 at St Michael and All Angels, Ladbroke Grove. Herbert a Gentleman.

Well...................that's a surprise.

..........thanks, Gins

I'd like to bet there's an indirect link...........I wonder if 'Power' is the correct version of 'Pomet ' in the record Stuart posted
