Grinton, Richmond etc are still a fair distance from Ripon, so this may all be wrong.

But I enjoyed digging it out, and there's always a chance that it is the right family, until proved otherwise......

Just googled John from Ripon, there are posts on another site discounting the connection between Dorothy and the correct John the poster is looking for + all the info above!!

Yes - or maybe no - have looked at all of the suggestions and there is a lot of 2+2 = 5 :-( The Pateley Bridge angle seemed ok but wives are wrong

I'm quite happy to be proved wrong........but PROOF is the key factor

You say, Mary, on the previous page that a James Cowling stonemason married an Eliza, but has no son John

He could easily have fathered a John with another woman

I can't find any evidence of Dorothy Hammond marrying, despite her assertions on censuses that she is married.

Many thanks everyone. Ricochet I got as far as ordering the will of Dorothy Cowling but her son John Cowling moved to New Guinea which is why he seems to disappear from any later census etc. her husband John the shoe sales man always seems to live apart from them which is very strange! It was also odd that there was a James Cowling who was a mason so could he have been illegitimate or did he know the James Cowling and use his details? it's all a bit strange! I really appreciate all the help and advice you're all giving.

Thanks Mavis. I've just traced him and although he is in yorkshire in 1881 he en moves back down to London so it's not him. I have wondered if Cowling was a middle name or even if he was from Cowling.

He may have been born under a different surname and mother married a Cowling

but then we have the problem that there is only 1 James Cowling a Mason.

There are several Cowling's who are Masons or Quarry men

then there is the fact that births not made to register until 1875 or be fined , only baptism's to help if not registered.
