Perhaps her remarriage wasn't the happiest?

Hello Robert, pleased you're up and running again.

The info that was posted about Catherine's death seems to have been taken from a tree on Ancestry that is unsourced and undocumented (what sources they do have seems to be from other members trees).

The 1871 marriage isn't shown on the tree but the record does check out. This is most likely the correct death:

Australia Death Index, 1787-1985
Name: Catherine McCarriston
Death Place: Brunswick, Victoria
Age: 47
Father's Name: U
Registration Year: 1888
Registration Place: Victoria
Registration Number: 8658
Estimated birth year: abt 1841

Hi Chris and other researchers.
The George PAIN who is subject to my research was born 1823 and died 1866.
Sorry for delay in replying but the computer crashed - been at repairers for 4 days.
I noticed when I re-read this e-mail that Catherine PAIN's death is shown as 1890.
When George died she remarried Neil McCORRISTON and her death is registered under that name.

A BIG thank you to Marie, Chris, Reggie and everyone else who has taken an interest and researched for me. You all have a far greater research experience and knowledge than I have. George PAIN was the publican of the Brunswick Hotel
so the death notice is correct, and he is buried in the Melbourne GeneraL Cemetery. i did not have the death regn number despite making enqs with Vict BDM, thank you. Rebecca may well be his sister - I have absolutely no information about George's family other than his parents names on his marriage cert. He may well have been a seaman. Also on all the documents I have about George - marriage cert, will, probate docs, the second Christian name Frederick is not shown, but Frederick may well be his second name.

Cheers and thanks again
Bob

When I was looking at this earlier, there was a George Paine arriving in Aus around 1858 - he was one of the crew (AB), which could tie up with Marie's find. I'll see if I can find it again

Good find with that death Chris, so birth earlier than thought.

More on the 1837 marriage for Rebecca Pain:

London, England, Marriages and Banns, 1754-1921

Name: Rebecca Pain - Servant

Both of full age, neither previously married and both of the parish.

Is this the death being attributed to him?

Australia Death Index, 1787-1985
Name: George Payne
Death Place: West Melbourne, Victoria
Mother's name: Mary Payne
Registration Year: 1866
Registration Place: Victoria
Registration Number: 10247

ADDED:
Death date given on Ancestry tree seems to be the burial date, according to funeral notice in The Argus (Melbourne, Vic) on Monday 16 April 1866

The friends of the late Mr. GEORGE PAIN are respectfully invited to follow his remains to the place of interment, Melbourne General Cemetery.
The funeral to move from his late residence, Brunswick Hotel, Brunswick, THIS DAY (Monday), April 16, at 3 o'clock p.m.
JOSEPH WHITE, Brunswick.

So probably died a couple of days earlier.

Thank you for the information re the tree on Ancestory. I am aware of that tree but I cannot access it. One person took the treee down after I contacted her and the other person (LOWE) will not answer my e-mail. This is definitely the family.
the same tree (LOWE) is also on Genes Reunited

Georges occupation is shown as miner/publican.
I cannot find any record of when he arrived in Australia.

You stated that he moved to Australia in mid 1860's, yet his marriage was in the early part of the decade.

Do you know when he actually entered the country? Easier to try to track him if you can give firm date info

As you have the parent's names, have you tried looking for info about them?

https://familysearch.org/

Was the 1863 marriage George's first?

What was his occupation?

John Report 3 May 2014 13:11

There's a REBECCA Pain, born Wrotham, Kent about 1815/1816 here on Genes. (Source: Genes Member Trees)

I'm finding who MAY be the same individual (on Ancestry public member family trees) with a father name of James Pain, mother's name not given or unclear. May worth you taking a look, if you have access.

Rebecca Pain is associated with the surname Wildish. It may be her as a widow (possibly of one John Wildish) 1851 UK Census for Minster-in-Sheppey, Kent 1628.135.19

No sign of a George Pain, born Wrotham, Kent on 1851 or 1861. (I'm wondering if he's at sea?)

Further, James Pain (cordwainer/mariner?) seems to have a connection with Sheerness, Kent/Harwich, Essex.

Thanks everybody for your replies. George PAIN married Catherine McMAHON in Geelong, Victoria, Australia 29/10/1863 - marr regn 3305 - a copy of which I obtained from the Victorian BDM Office. The names of his parents and place of birth are on the marriage certificate. George died on 14/4/1866 in Brunswick, Victoria, leaving his widow Catherine and a son and daughter. Catherine remarried
a Neil McCORRISTON on 23/5/1871 in Melbourne Victoria.
