you can also look up some census + BMD records for free at local libraries in GB .But it takes me an hour to come up with stuff that regulars seem to find in seconds

Ricochet Report 31 Jul 2014 08:29

yes, Shae, doing family history can be costly, especially if you wish to have accurate data

Most of the helpers on here subscribe to either Ancestry or Find My Past, and use the info they find there to help others

You can take out a free 14-day trial on both sites

familysearch is a free site, which has 1871 and 1881 censuses in full, and lots of other records, but they are not as recent as those on the paid-for siates

Ancestry seems a very good research site. Expensive though. :-S

Dea is correct about where I found the info.

I was making use of Ancestry's free weekend.

Ricochet would have read about the gassing and the other details on Charles's service record on Ancestry.

It's fabulous what you find out. Thankyou Ricochet and Dea x
Re Johanna/Annie' death, I've been told childbirth and consumption. Don't know which. So Charles must have had Charles jnr and Thomas in the catholic home before meeting Mary. I must have had the wrong census record re only Charles, Mary and Henry being listed. I read all about the 4 Worcestershire Regiment. Very interesting reading. Lots of poor fellows being shot for desertion and cowardice. I had no idea that was as prevalent as it seems. Poor buggars, especially the young ones, ie 20 yrs old etc. Where did you, find the info about Charles Richard Taylor being gassed etc? I now remember my mum telling me that. xox

Not sure if this might just be a 'red herring' but here goes:

A 'late wedding' ??

Marriages Mar 1903 (>99%)
**Chase Mary Alexandra Hampstead 1a 1004
Hammond Ethel Margaret Hampstead 1a 1004
Jaggers William Charles Hampstead 1a 1004
**Taylor Charles Hampstead 1a 1004

An 'early birth' ??

Births Dec 1900
Taylor Henry Chase Hendon 3a 205

'Could' be a fit for Mary ??

Births Dec 1870
CHASE Mary Edmonton 3a 160

It will need some work but it is all 'possible' ??

perhaps Mary was already married to someone else

Like you, I haven't been able to see a marriage between her and Charles

You are forgiven Ricochet - It 'was' very hot ;-) :-D

I should think that this is 'Annie's' death:

England & Wales, FreeBMD Death Index, 1837-1915 about Johanna Taylor
Name: Johanna Taylor
Estimated birth year: abt 1874
Registration Year: 1898
Registration Quarter: Apr-May-Jun
Age at Death: 24
Registration district: Hampstead
Parishes for this Registration District: View Ecclesiastical Parishes associated with this Registration District

Registered in Hampstead but it looks as if Hamstead and Marylebone swapped bits now and again so they must be very close.

Sorry, Dea, missed the marriage you added. my excuse is the heat and the late hour...........lol!

Having looked again at the image, I can see that the 18 has been added in a different hand, and would, in any case indicate a marriage c1892

Unfortunately, there are no baptism records for the children on line; they'd have been useful

Copies of birth certs for the first and last child, at least, would seem to be essential

Dea

Dea Report 27 Jul 2014 07:51

I believe the 'married 18 years' is probably a mistake on Charles's part Ricochet - 'He' probably completed the form and 'he' had been married for 18 years - you will see the first marriage to 'Johanna' Barrett in 1894 which I posted on page 1.

Shae says that Annie (Johanna) died soon after Thomas was born but I haven't found this (I will take another look).

Mary appears to be his second wife although I am not sure they were actually married as I can not find an entry for this as yet.

You say the mother's name was Annie barrett

Where does that come from?

The wife of Charles snr in 1911 was called Mary, and the census image shows that they had been married 18 years, and had 7 children, all still alive

It might pay you to get a copy of this

You might find this site of interest Shae :

http://www.worcestershireregiment.com/bat_4_1916.php

There are several photo's of the men on there and there looks to be quite a lot of 'small people' (Bantams) amongst them.

I think this is the Regiment they were with.

Des, I've just been looking for that one and can't locate it. I'd say I must have the wrong one. The info you've found is too exact. I'll keep looking through my saved records. Hopefully I kept it. Brilliant about my grandad and the bantams! Thankyou so much. X

Dea

Dea Report 26 Jul 2014 16:16

Shae - can you post the 1911 where you had found the father and his new wife without Charles and Thomas because if that one is right then mine and the army record can't be???

Dea x

Dea

Dea Report 26 Jul 2014 16:15

If the record Ricochet posted is the correct one then it shows that Charles was in the Bantam Battalion 4th (or 14th) Worcestershire Regt. so that must be where Thomas was too ?

The documents were stamped by an Officer of the 14th Gloster Regt.

Wow. Where did you find that Dea? I've only seen one without Charles jnr and Thomas on it in the 1911 census.
Lots of kids eeek, I can see where my mother got her middle name from, Adelaide.
I didn't know all these people existed lol
