I have found this in The Huddersfield Chronicle and West Yorkshire Advertiser for Saturday, 14 September 1867 under Marriages

On the 11th inst., at the Registry Office, John Street, Mr Green Senior to Miss Mary Lodge, both of Cumberworth.

So this begs the question did they ever marry in a Church?

There are marriage announcements for couples married in Wesleyan Methodist Chapels in this article.

Yes I wondered if that was the only way.

Some of the on line copies of the parish registers are taken from the films made originally by the Mormon church- of the actual registers, where the people concerned signed the sheet. and these in some districts held by the local record office, perhaps that's the way to go.

Thank you all for your input.

It looks like Wesley's grandfather was called George so there could be some confusion around that.

Also 'Green' could have been mistranscribed as 'George'

Margaret,

I'm afraid that you will have to buy that marriage certificate if you want to see how Green signed .................... it might be possible to tell from the copy of the original that you will get.

Your best alternative actually is to find out where the Parish Records are kept and go there in person.

All we see on the internet are copies also ............... which is different from what you seem to want.

Wesley was the younger brother of Whitefield both sons of Green Senior.
Whitefield stayed in Huddersfield and died there in 1951.
The other brother- Wesley, I think died in Canada in 1947.

It is the identity of this Canadian Wesley I am trying to establish. On a marriage in 1920 in Toronto, he gives his father as George Senior and his mother as Mary Lodge.
But he also says that he was born in Stroud, Gloucester.
However there doesn't appear to be anyone of name Senior registered at Stroud in this period.

So a bit of a puzzle.

Thank you all. I have most of this information, I was keen to see how he wrote his name, as later in 1920 in Canada his son Wesley, gives it as George Senior, and his mother as Mary Lodge. on his own marriage record in Toronto.
Which makes it difficult to be sure of the relationship.
This may be-- as Green was known to his friends and family of course, as George, and officially he was Green.
OR it could be part of Wesley's evasiveness.

thank you for your help

The names of the couple are Green Senior and Mary Lodge. They are I think Methodists, so it might have taken place in a Methodist Chapel, and not all those records are on line.

I am interested to see if he signed as Green, or some other name. He was baptised Green, and it is not unique, but I thought he may have used a more common name.

thank you

What's the name of the couple, Margaret?

I can then have a look on the ancestry site that I subscribed too and see if there is a marriage for them
