I have a William Gair born in Whitby 1847.
I have a child Robert Gair born 1868 in Whitby.
I cannot find William on any census records or marriage records although I have his death in Whitby in 1890.

I suspect 'Gair' was misheard by the enumerator and he wrote it down as 'Gay'

Note only BMD's had the correct spelling, also there is no birth for a William 'Gay' in Whitby around the time Robert's father was born
