I can't for the life of me find Herbert/Francis on the 1901 census.......sooo annoying as it might have helped to track down Charles and Emily.

Gillikins Report 13 Aug 2015 22:36

here is a sheer bit of guesswork.... looking for Emily

1891 an emily parsons, age 38, wife, birthplace given woodlands, somersetshire, reg. melksham, sub trowbridge ecc st. thomas, par trowbridge, wilts. [1853] wool doubler...this is an educated guess.

1911 emily parsons, b. east woodlands, somerset subd 4 is 66 b. 1845, but no marriage yr given.

Woodlands, is very close to Frome, and some Brimsons did live there early 1800s... but not sure if this is Emily. ???

Unfortunately, that couple appear together in the 1881 census.

James Parsons in the 1881 England Census
Name:James Parsons
Age:29
Estimated birth year:abt 1852
Relationship to Head:Head
Spouse:Emily Parsons
Gender:Male
Where born:Berwick St John, Wiltshire, England
Civil Parish:Trowbridge
County/Island:Wiltshire
Country:England
Street address:22 Thomas St
Marital Status:Married
Occupation:Bricklayer
Registration district:Melksham

Household Members:

James Parsons 29
Emily Parsons 27 (Cloth worker) Woodlands, Somerset

Marriages Dec 1873 (>99%)
Cuzner Emily Melksham 5a 267
Parsons James Melksham 5a 267

As Charles was in Frome, Somerset in 1881 and Emily was in Wimbledon, Surrey....it might be that the couple separated. Emily might very well be living as a "wife" with another partner in 1891.......but couldn't marry, because she was still married to Charles.

Pure speculation of course!

Prickles.

Gillikins Report 14 Aug 2015 12:28

I've speculated a little differently... he is living in brothers house and being fed [boarder] and she managed to find work in London... as they were very poor.
If that is the son in the Union workhouse later, perhaps she didnt know for a while, and got him to London later. Perhaps Charles died :-(..??... I've looked at this, but so many the same name.

Gillikins Report 9 Sep 2015 10:56

Still have not found the death/end of Emily. I can't pinpoint a suitable death.. so started playing with marriages.. A few possibilities in London area, if she managed to marry.. being a cook in a household in 1881.
Spotted a marriage in St Olave area which could cover Surrey in 1885 to Frederick Thomas COTGROVE. Birth ref. for him Rochford, Essex JunQ 1857 on BMD.
Just in case there is a suitable birth afterwards, looked for births and I find many in the Rochford area... but one catches the eye iin SepQ 1887 Amy Parsons COTGROVE. Emily would be about 38 yr.age so it is possible. The birth for Amy is Cheltenham, Glos. but a death age 0 at St. Olave, Southwark about 6 months or so.
All guesswork,...
Therefore, Emily may have changed her name.

Another recent thought was that Emily's brother emigrated to Australia in 1877. and I notice the newspapers have many adverts for FREE passages to Aus the year before in the West Country. I wonder if either Charles Hansford Parsons died, or got a free passage at some time with his brother in law and left Emily behind. ???

Anybody like to help here with these thoughts..??? I think you are all better at this than me. Thanks.G

Gillikins Report 20 Sep 2015 15:00

Discovery!!!
googling Charles Hansford Parsons, it seems someone has researched him, and she shows a death date in 1896...

TITLE: Charles Parsons by Stella Joyce Parsons
ATTACHED TO: Charles Hansford Parsons (1849-1896) Ancestry.

It looks like Death date thus: BMD
Deaths JunQ 1896.
Parsons Charles 46 Lambeth 1d 223

If this is accurate, maybe the couple regrouped in London/Surrey, and could help find Emily.

SORRY TO ASK, CAN ANYONE LOOK UP THIS STORY ON ANCESTRY PLEASE.

Gillikins Report 26 Oct 2015 16:00

A bit more to this story ... someone kindly accessed an Ancestry account, showing the name Charles Hansford Parsons, claiming he was that persons grandfather, and that his only child with his "wife" Jane Lee was orphaned by 1896. Charles died, it is said that Charles died from pneumonia in a Lambeth institution, so she must have the death cert for that. Her father was called Herbert Warren Parsons. I find him on 1911 single and boarding at Springfield Road Walk, Lydenham age 24
The other child of Emily and Charles, was also called Herbert (Francis Herbert). In 1911 he is married with two children and lives in Wimbledon, as reported here.

I cannot find a marriage for Jane Lee to Charles Hansford Parsons, She was given in the account as nee Wheeler, and so the origional marriage was to George Lee at Croydon sepQ 1860.

The London Boroughs are difficult, and I still cannot find Emily's death. It is difficult to second-guess if Charles came up to London to be with Emily leaving the first Herbert in an institution, and buried her, and then found a new partner, giving the second child the name Herbert also. As they lived so close, I wonder if the two boys knew each other. ???

Gillikins Report 3 Jan 2016 10:42

Just a little more information given by a kind Genes member.

It seems that it is possible that the ancestry member may not have realised that the places of birth given for the Charles Parsons and Jane (ex George Lee, nee Wheeler)
were mistakenly swapped in 1891. She was from Frome, and he was Charles Henry b Bethnal Green. This member informed that Charles Hansford parsons died Frome, 1884. So perhaps the wrong lead.
I can't help but wonder why Emily's son ends up marrying in 1905 in Surrey, Kingston, and remaining there for the rest of his life, if his mother did not survive until his arrival in the area, evidently after 1891 when he was institutionalised in Frome, age 14!
Any thoughts appreciated.....

Gillikins Report 13 Jun 2018 23:13

Herbert, Emily's son, ended up marrying in London in 1905, it seems he must have gone up there sometime after 1891., see above census for him...but, why did he do that if his mother was already dead?
I just cannot find her, that is Emily, and am now wondering if she is living under another name.
Herbert marries in 1905 to Ellen Jane Upshell at Kingston, daughter of George Upshell.
1891 George Upshell is recorded as
George Upshall, Russell Road, South Wimbledon, Kingston RD
George Upshall head head 34 ? Board Foreman b. Dorsetshire
Julia Upshall wife 36 b.Poole, Dorset
George Upshall son 12 Dorset
Fredrick Upshall son 10 Dorset
Ellen J. Upshall dau 8 Dorset
William J Upshall son 6 Surrey
Emma Upshall dau 2 Surrey
Samuel Upshall son 4months Wimbledon

I think the above wife might be Emma Julia Meaden married at Poole, 1878 ?
Death might be Emma Julia Upshell, Kingston, age 40 JunQ 1893.

in 1901 George has another wife, Emily who comes from Frome.
1901 Merton Road, Kingston
George Upshell head 45 foreman district council Poole
Emily Upshell 45 Frome, Somersetshire
George R. Upshell 20 Poole
Fredk J Upshell 18 shop assistant Dorset
Ellen J. Upshell 17 dom. servant Poole
William C Upshell 15 railway signalman Wimbledon
Samuel C. Upshell 10 Wimbledon, Surrey

I see a marriage of a George Upshell to Emily Wakefield, in Kingston in 1894, JunQ.
However, as Emily is supposed to come from Frome, I cannot find this name as a birth there.

If Emily Brimson/Parsons married a Wakefield, was it this one...
Emily Parsons MarQ 1882 to George Wakefield at Lambeth, which apparently spanned counties London and Surrey. But is it her, and is she a widow at that time.??
Right area, but would it be before Charles Hansford Parsons (first husband) died perhaps?

At this point I am wondering if I am barking up the wrong tree / over speculating, and am not sure where to go from here. Any advice please.

Emily not found in 1891 and Herbert not found in 1901...

ErickaH,
Thank you so much, it's been driving me mad. How did you find the marriage details please? Is there an occupation mentioned for her?
It was a wild guess, as I haven't the firm death for her first husband. No matter, I'm so grateful. Thanks a mil. Can now look for them in census.
Thanks Gill

Looking for Emily's first husband,s death, assuming Emily is a true widow, I see a Somerset Monumental Inscription on this site, and wonder if it has been mistranscribed, as
Charles Merefield Parsons, Should read Hansford if him? M instead of H? And the f and d are in relatively correct place?

I think that's a red herring, Gill.

No occupation for Emily when she married Wakefield, but that's normal

Aged 40, allegedly, but that might have been to make the age difference seem less

Her father was a Boot Maker

Emily BRIMSON's father was a shoemaker
