Joyce- that information was from the 1911 census- which tells us that Selena and William had two children, but one had died- Murial was the child still living.

HOWEVER, if your Father was Edmund McDowell, the son of Alfred Ernest McDowell, then Selena Leathlean and William H Mcdowell born 1865 are not your family.

(Duke Street on that 1881 Census eh?!!)

I suspect that William Henry born in 1874 was sent to Canada first as a home child.

It looks like his mother (Editha) died in 1881. May be his father died or could not look after all the children?

There is a William McDowell listed on the home children records but no age is given- but this could well be him:

Offence At East Stonehouse
William Henry McDowell, 71, seaman, pleaded guilty to an offence at East Stonehouse on May 20th, 1912. It was stated, that the accused, after the offence disappeared for some time until found at Devonport and was arrested. He was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment with hard labour.

I was told emigrated in 1888 who I think is my great uncle not sure on this one as a lady who says im her 3rd cousin sent me photos of my Father Edmund and Uncle Jack

His parents' marriage. He was a seaman RN of 50 Mount Street. Samuel Hellyer and Louisa Wilson were witnesses. His father was a shoemaker and hers was a shipwright.

It appears that the W.H. McDowell who married Selena Leathleam is not the one you are looking for since he was a fair bit older.
When did your man emigrate and when/where did he die?
