Ruth Report 18 Apr 2016 12:39

Hi. For those of you following this thread, here's an update :

I followed the original suspicion of Alfred marrying Matilda, and their child Leslie.
Leslie birth certificate shows his father to be Albert Derek smith not Alfred. However all my links show his father to be Alfred !! "Albert" states he's a butcher and he's in the army. Checked the service number - this number doesn't belong to an Alfred or Albert. In fact it doesn't belong to a smith. And I'm unable to locate either Albert or Alfred Derek smith in the army records !
The plot is thickening.
But then checking the birth certificate I notice typed in the corner "adopted". So another dead end.
Any ideas how I can find out how Leslie was adopted. Dad was adopted by grans new husband. So maybe this was the case with Leslie ??

Another searcher helped me with a link within Nancy shepherd marriage, I received private firms and an address for a son from 2013 - think this is a non blood cousin. I have written and still awaiting a reply.

So, throwing this in for suggestions -
Matilda was from County Durham when she married Alfred in Doncaster.
Gran was from York married in York
Nancy was from Gateshead married in York.
There's also a Sarah stead that married Alfred smith - don't know if this is the same one. But she was also Gateshead and married in Doncaster.
Is this all too much of a coincidence ??

Any ideas ?? Please. :-S

Thank you all for your help xx

Percy (Jack) Shepherd born Bradford 20/2/1898 died USA 1972 married Edith Walmsley in Bradford 1920 and had son Ronald 1920 in Bradford, they emigrated to USA 1923 and stayed there.

I'am just posting in case Ronald was thought to be brother to Emily Mary and Nancy Jane Shepherd.

This looks to be parents of Nancy and Emily.
Roger Shepherd married Emily Walmsley A/M/J 1925 in Thirsk North Yorkshire V9d P956.

Sorry meant to say on that last post, when Alfred Derek was on the ER with your Grandmother, he was listed as Derek Alfred.

Probate can be searched here

I think you have to order it. I am not terribly up on English records. Perhaps some of the other helpers can tell us if it is worth spending money on these.

There is also this probate but it may be a bit of a long shot as we don't know what age this man was when he died.

Surname First name Date of probate Probate number Date of death Document type Registry
SMITH DEREK ALFRED 12 December 2011 3693660 06 June 2010. Grant only. Manchester

Wow. Probate took a long time ?!
That would be great. So how do we get that information ? X

rootgatherer Report 4 Apr 2016 18:46

Better still, probate for her was only granted in 2013.

Perhaps someone can tell us if it would give any addresses that would lead to someone who may know of Nancy or Alfred's whereabouts.

And this seems to be her husband

This looks like Nancy's sister's death. Wondering if the informant can be traced on current ERs?

Hi.

Just a quickie to let you know. The marriage to Nancy - got the certificate today. It's definitely linked to the Alfred Derek born in 1924 in Doncaster. Which appears to be the right Alfred Derek on my dads birth certificate.
The one thing it threw up was that he was living in Gateshead when he married Nancy ....
Has Anyone any ideas of what I should do next please x

Ruth, I tried to follow up that marriage too but births Smith mmn Burke is quite a common combination. Couldn't find a remarriage for Matilda. If it was me, I'd wait to see what the Smith / Shepherd marriage reveals. Should it turnout to be your Alfred, I would then order the son's birth certificate to find out his middle name.

Nancy had siblings so perhaps we can work forward to trace them. I'm not seeing a death or remarriage for Nancy nor finding her on ERs.

If you don't mind, can you let us know when the certificate arrives please?

Thank you.

I've done it, ordered a copy. But prob won't get it till the end of next week.

On a previous search I did. I found a marriage of Alfred 1948 (I think) to Matilda Burke. Do u think that's a possibility too ??

Thanks x

You can't order the certificates from the GRO online using the reference numbers (I.e, volume and pages numbers.

Nancy J Shepherd
Spouse Surname: Smith, Alfred D
Date of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar 1955
Registration district: York
Inferred County: Yorkshire West Riding
Volume Number: 2d
Page Number: 1851

I think the current price is £9.25 but more expensive if you order anywhere but the GRO.
