Have been going around in circles trying to locate a birth record for my late mother. The birth information I have wasl provided by my late mother but none of it has helped at all. The mystery may exist because I was told by my dad (now also deceased) after mum's death that she gave birth to an illegitimate son during the second world war. Perhaps she changed her name to avoid any chance of being traced? However, mum gave the name in the subject box on her marriage to my father in 1954 so she must have produced a birth certificate at that time? Mum states her fathers name as Arthur Steeden on the marriage certificate and gives his profession as a social club proprietor (deceased). I recall from conversations many years ago that mum said she had siblings but that there had been a falling out and no contact had been maintained with them. I am now wondering if mum was illegitimate but knew her fathers' name and gave it at the time of her marriage but that still does not explain how she was able to provide a birth certificate in order to get married. Unless rules were a little elastic then!

Any help or advice that anyone can give would be very much appreciated.

Many thanks in advance.

Dorothy

Dorothy. What is your mothers maiden name on your birth certificate?
Maybe if you give more info, ie Mums DOB, where born , marriage , etc , others may be able to help you.
I am sure I had to produce my birth cert , when i got married in 1956, had to prove you where over 21, or if not had to have permission from Father

Wonder if this was her father? Not unusual to find an exaggerated occupation on a marriage certificate.

Lancashire Evening Post 01 December 1931

DEFENDENT TO PAY £1 A MONTH ON JUDGEMENT SUMMONS.

Arthur Joseph Steeden, described as a secretary, of King St,
Covent Garden, was the defendent in a judgement summons
at Westminster County Court today, respecting £880 9s. 11d.
due to the Rev. William Henry Norris and Mrs. Susan May Norris,
his wife, of Longton Vicarage, Preston Lancashire.
Judge Sir Alfred Tobin: It is a large sum. How is it owing ?
Mr. F.H. Adams, solicitor: It is the result of a motor accidentand judgement for damages obtained in the High Court.
It was stated by Mr. Steeden that he was under the impression
that his policy of insurance covered the accident risk at the time,
but the insurance company repudiated it.
Judge Tobin: It is a very dreadful thing not being insured.
What can you do about it? Bad for you and for the unfortunate
clergyman and his wife who were injured.
Mr. Adams said that Mr. Steeden and his wife received £2. 10s.
a week at the club and had board and lodgings free.
Mr. Steeden: I can only offer a pound a month.
Judge Tobin: Pay one pound a month and no committal.

That certainly seems to be the same man Dea. I only see a birth for one Arthur Joseph around that time. There is also a record of him going to and returning from South Africa. I note on the above that he is described as married and also on the 1939 register. I have found his probate and he had remarried in 1939. His son Walter is single and living with Arthur's mother in 1939. I just can't find anything on his first wife, no death or remarriage.
