The pre-WW1 b.certs for several Canadian provinces are free on-line, as well as the full service records of half the 699999 WW1 soldiers (plus the attestation papers of 95% of rest). Also the Canadian 1901 census gives d.o.b. (the 1911 just gives month of birth), so I've seen a lot of d.o.b's, and it's not unusual for the year of birth to disagree, but the birthdays rarely do.

I would feel quite comfortable saying Fred's d.o.b. was 23/2/1910.

mgnv ..............

as I said, my grandfather was the oddity in changing his birthday :-D

I have sometimes wondered whether his parents had told him he was born on Christmas Day, so they only had to buy 1 present, and that possibly he couldn't change the story when he did get his birthday certificate?

I have no information on when he did find out ................ it could have been when he joined up in WW1, or not until he had to apply for OAP in the 1950s

Sylvia - My mum never had a b.cert until she went to work aged 14. Apparently she needed one for some purpose (maybe to buy stamps - I don't know). Anyway, since one was required under some Act or other, she got to buy a cheap one that only cost 6d instead of the standard 2/6 (or whatever). This b.cert said "only valid for the purposes of the Act", but of course it was a valid b.cert.

People were required to prove their age for OAPs. These were for 70 y.o.'s when they were introduced in 1909, which meant anyone aged 72 or older was born before civil rego began (plus anyone born in Scotland or Ireland). Baptismal certs were accepted, but many don't know where, or if, they were baptized, and there could be no one still around to ask. I didn't know where I was baptized - I knew who my god-parents were, so I could guess where I was baptized, but I didn't KNOW - well not until my brother died, and I got the family photos and papers, amongst which was my baptismal cert - (my guess was right). Anyway, many people couldn't produce a baptismal cert, so the census was opened up thousands of times to substantiate ages.

There are lots of jurisdictions in N America where civil registration of BMDs didn't exist in the 1890s - in Canada, civil registration only began in 1925 in NWT, and the records are quite incomplete before the 1940s, not that anyone lives there.
A more interesting case is Nova Scotia, where civil rego began in 1864, but the province was facing bankruptcy in the 1870s, so they suspended civil rego for Bs and Ds for 30y. When they restarted in 1908, there was a special provision for late rego's, Births pre-1/10/1908 are online, and there are a fair number of late rego's, some 50-60y late (I suppose they're wanting passports or pensions), and usually there's a letter from the registrar there saying what's been done to verify the birth - things like letters from childhood neighbours, school teachers, affidavits from the subject and family members, etc, and occasionally the registrar says he opened up the census to check that (1901 listed a d.o.b.).

My gran changed my aunt's d.o.b. My gran wanted her to be born on a particular date, but she missed it by 10 min. My dad was around 20 and in the house at the time, so he knew, but my gran made him promise never to tell anyone, esoecially my aunt, what the real d.o.b. was. He never told her, just me and mum, and we never said anything. I know gran made a 20 min alteration in the time when she rego'ed the birth, but they never recorded the time (and I've forgotten whether she added or subtracted the 20 min, so I don't recall the true d.o.b. and can't find it out now, so I guess I'll take the average date and keep my gran happy).

I have made many mistakes in the past by assuming, so I am hoping the marriage cert will help confirm age (roughly) but more importantly fathers name. My mum knows nothing about her fathers family, she can't remember any aunts or uncles. Only that Frederick Ricketts drove a truck for Whitbreads Brewery near Old St, EC1, London in the 30's and 40's. The only pic I have is of Fred with his Whitbreads truck.
Will need your help again when I get the marriage cert.

Nicola Report 6 Oct 2016 20:27

Just got the copy of marriage cert for Frederick Ricketts and Elisabeth Alice Elliott on the 12 April 1930, Frederick was aged 22, address for both of them is 39 Scrutton Street,EC1. Writing is really bad but pretty sure his fathers name is Albert Ricketts, Occ: Painter. Witnesses looks like William Goswell and Sarah Ann Elliott.
I wish I could get a 2nd opinion on this writing..
So I can only find a Albert Leonard Ricketts in 1911 census born 1885 with a son Frederick Leonard Ricketts born 1910. Was this Albert a Painter?? So disappointed, seems like I am back to square one. Really need some help.

SylviaInCanada Report 6 Oct 2016 20:36

Albert Leonard on the 1911 is shown as General Labourer

That does not however mean that he might not have become a painter by 1930

My mum was born at 39 Scrutton St in 1933, will ask her about Ellen Pettitt, in 1911 census Ellen was living in shoreditch with Albert Pettitt and kids Albert, Alice and Stanley. Could someone look up the address for this family in 1911?

How can this be so difficult?? a fairly uncommon surname and have death and marriage certs and know birth was between 1907 and 1910 and father's name and occupation but still can't find anything. can't even find the witness William Goswell, hoping that someone else viewing the marriage cert will help. Thanks Dea for offering to look at it. I have scanned it ready to send.

Was thinking that usually in theses cases (as we have found many a time!) some little thing will crop up, that will be the key that opens it up...

Don't get too down, fingers crossed...

You mentioned Frederick Leonard born 1910, son of Albert Leonard.

It's not that Frederick- he married Ruby Wilson in 1934 and is living next door to his Mum in 1939 at 45 Durants Road.
