THE ELECTION OF WORKHOUSE PORTER
The next business was the election of a WorkhousePorter in the stead of the late officer
There were ten applicants of whom five were present. The following were the applicants:
Frederick Etherington, Ryhill, 27 years of age, single; testimonials from Mr. J. Hall,
Mr. J.M. Sykes and Mr. J Robinson. Edward Green, Barugh, 26 years of age, had a testimonial
from Messrs. Canter, Whalley, and Co., and Mr. George Ward, seedsman of Barnsley
William Jenkinson, Worsbro' Bridge, single, 28 years of age, had testimonial from
Mr. R.R. Maddison. Thomas Linton, Woolley Farm, Silkstone, was not present but sent in
testimonials from Mr. R Southern, Mr. W. Horsfall, and Mr. Lowen. John Crow,
Barnsley, 34 years of age, single, no testimonials. Joshua Franshaw, single, 24 years of age,
the son of a farmer residing at Hindringham, had testimonials from the Rev J.M.D. Owen,
vicar of Hindringham, and Mr Langford of the same place. Smith Machen, Roystone,
no testimonials. Robert Ledger, Burleigh Street, Barnsley, no testimonials,
but being a singer, could teach the children to sing in chapel. George Broomhead, Barnsley,
no testimonials. Thomas Batty, Monk-Bretton, no testimonials.
The candidates Etheington, Green, Jenkinson, Crow and Franshaw, were present, and answered
such questions as were put to them by the guardians. The votes for three of he candidates were
taken, when Frederick Etherington of Ryhill was elected.
The guardians shortly afterwards adjourned.

I did not mean for you to do all that, but many thanks any way, all I wanted was the bit about Frederick, and thought you could cut and past it, but as usual I was wrong.
I can't thank you enough for all that work you did on it, do you live in the Barnsley area?

Ok and thanks for all your input I think that's it on Frederick so will now close it.
I am from Wallasey originally and left for Canada in 1965, been back twice and coming over next year for a final visit

I'm a Lancashire lass, from close to Manchester, but I spent 5 years in Liverpool, and married a man from Chester. We left the UK in 1967 :-D

Hi I dont know if you are still on here, although i have no info on your family search, i am very local, my grandma married at Felkirk, i was born and bred Ryhill, i had relatives way back who lived at Haw Park.
