Peter went on to marry in Canada in 1957, apparently having to leave the Mounties to do so. So it would perhaps be the reason that Vera returned as Peter had met someone over there.

As mentioned earlier in the thread Peter went to Canada on the 27th of Dec 1952 on the Scythia, and Vera is not on the same passenger list, so she must have known Peter quite well (??? romantically) to have gone out in 1954 to Canada.

Hi ErikaH
The 1939 register listing that you have is the correct Peter Hebblethwaite, my uncle, and I agree the Cooke connection seems to be a coincidence. The officially closed record is my aunt who is still alive and was born in 1934.

So my Harold Cooke / Winifred Townsend (Peter's Uncle and Aunt) are a red-herring as regards Vera.

1939 for Peter - whose MOTHER was a Cooke before marriage

Westcliffe House Church Road, Basford R.D., Nottinghamshire, England
Cyril G Hebblethwaite 15 Sep 1890 Male Traveller Commercial Oil Married 101 1
Gwendoline M Hebblethwaite 17 Dec 1901 Female Unpaid Domestic Duties Married 101 2
Peter Hebblethwaite 15 Mar 1930 Male At School Single 101 3
Betty Andrews (Hebbletthwait) 13 May 1931 Female At School Single 101 4
The record for this person is officially closed. Can I get around this?

It is certainly the same PH, but the Cooke connection is not relevant, as far as I can see

Have just read your reply re Harry Cooke I don’t think it’s the same Harry Cooke as my Grandfather But who knows Without doing any researching

As far as I know my Vera Wilson nee Cooke went out to join Peter Hebblethwaite, After Peter was there in Canada And for some reason came back to England later
Bye for now Olive

I don't see a Winifred A Harvey born at that time in Nottinghamshire.

There's this one in Worksop:

Births Sep 1893 (>99%)
Harvey Winifred Annie Worksop 7b 48

However, Ancestry suggests she married John W Taylor in Worksop in 1915 - and she and John are together in Worksop in 1939.

EDIT:
there's a closed record with Harold and Winifred in 1939.
Could be a Townsend/Harvey daughter born in Worksop in 1933.

ErikaH Report 8 Jan 2020 17:58

Harry Cooke is a very common name, but the answer is to do the research

Presumably, Hebblethwaite's mother was a Cooke before her marriage

Find her on censuses and see who is in the same household

Alternatively, purchase a copy of the 1938 marriage cert to find out Harry's father's name - and whether or not he had been married previously

The 1939 census posted above is not for the people you are connected with

Stephen Report 8 Jan 2020 17:46

My Harold Cooke was born on the 7th of August 1897 in Gainsborough and Winifred on the 31st of March 1894. I think, but don't know for definite, that Winifred was his second wife.

It seemed quite a coincidence that Peter Hebblethwaite is the nephew of a Harold (Harry) Cooke, and that a Vera Wilson went to Canada with him for some reason unless they are related, but it does appear at the moment to be a coincidence..

Welcome to the boards, Steve.

If you mean the Harry Cooke (1878) who married Olive Taylor in 1903 and who is still with her in 1939 (records posted on this page as well as earlier in this thread) - then no, he can't be the same one.

Hello
I have just come across this conversation today.
I am the son of Betty Andrews (Hebblethwaite), grandson of Gwendolen Hebblethwaite (Cooke) and nephew of Peter Hebblethwaite. I have a photograph of Peter before he went to Canada in his Nottingham Police Uniform.
Is Harry Cooke the same Harold Cooke, Gwendolen's brother, that married Winifred Townsend in 1938??

I would love to exchange information with folks about this. As it happens I also live about three miles from Hucknall Library.

Hope to hear from you all. Regards Steve Andrews

Olive, the 1939 states September for Jean!...(apologies!, Dec. written on image!)

You need the Birth Certificate...no Baptism, but, they don't always give a Birthdate either...

Going to Library won't really help, there isn't looking to be a Baptism for her, as I said above James and Walter Francis can be found on below, no Olive.

(and James has a birthdate, but not given for Walter)
