Benjamin Report 5 Jun 2017 19:27

Hi folks

Though I've been doing this for a while, I still seem to come up with the odd stumper. So here goes....

Mary Ann Crew (born 1852, Hanham, Gloucstershire) married George Hawkins (1851-89) and had 9 children betwen 1870 and 1888.

Fast forward to 1896. Her son, George Samuel Hawkins (born 1877) enlists in the Army, and names his next of kin as Mary Ann Bateman (mother).

Sometime between this date and the 1901 census, she moves from Ystrad Rhondda, South Wales, back to hir birthplace of Hanham, where we find her on the 1901 census, once again widowed, and living with her daughter Rosina (listed on the census as Rose). She is, once again, widowed.

By 1911, she is back in the Rhondda Valley, living with her widowed son, William Hawkins and his stepson, Cliffiord. At that point, she's reverted to the Hawkins surname.

One problem, though - the FreeBMD seach brings up no likely marriage to a Mr Bateman, no matter what combination of names I try.

Can anyone suggest how I can crack this nut?

But how can she be the daughter of George Hawkins on that 1891 census?

Christine

Christine Report 5 Jun 2017 20:15

I expect it should be daughter-in-law? Perhaps George referred to her as 'daughter' because she had been married to his son?

I assume she is daughter in law and he was her husbands father

IF she was married to Mr Bateman -

The only Batemans who died in Pontypridd district between 1891 and 1901 were children.

In Keynsham district, the only possibles are:
Samuel Joseph, aged 26 in 1891,
George, aged 38 in 1894,
William, aged 36 in 1894,
another George, aged 67 in 1894,
Frank, aged 48 in 1899

But no, there is no record of a likely marriage.
It looks as if they weren't married, but she was using his name.

Thyanks for all the feedback, guys.

The census in Welsh Newton posted by alviegal is definitely a red herring; as far as we know, Mary Ann was in the Rhondda until at least 1896, including on that census (as previously stated).

The earliest record we have of her being anywhere other than the Rhondda as an adult is the 1901 census, as identified above. This is followed by a 1902 military record for her youngest son, Isaac (see 1891 census for Ystrad Rhondda shown above), who lists her as his next-of-kin, at the same address in Hanham as the 1901 census shown above.

So, we're still no closer to identiying the mysterious Mr. Bateman......

Thanks again, everyone.

I already had all the census stuff posted above, so there was no need to have posted it. My post was an attempt to find the mysterious Mr. Bateman, rather than anything about Mary Ann herself.

Chris - I have the marriage certificate for Rosina Hawkins and George White, dated 26/12/1906 and no, Mary Ann does not sign it as a witness - the witnesses are Lily Price and Frederick Thorne, the second one being the bride's brother-in-law. As it happens, the 1911 census is, so far, the most recent thing I have for them, though she IS mentioned [as "Mrs White, Treorky"] in the newspaper obit you provided a link to.
