You probably have the correct birth certificate. Thomas Whitehead would likely have been named as the father as Celia's mother was still married to him.

The marriage certificate shows that Thomas was born in 1820, with a father James.

There's a Thomas Whitehead born 1820 in Monks Horton with father James. This one fits the Thomas Whitehead who was in Maidstone prison.

Hi Christina - thanks for your thoughts

I think I may then have a wrong birth certificate - the marriage certificate that I have I know is correct and this does confirm her fathers name as William

The only thing is I could only find one birth for a Celia Whitehead?

Thanks

ChristinaS Report 1 Sep 2017 17:25

Hi, I'm late with joining this thread. Started at the beginning so I'm going back to Celia Whitehead.

On 27th August, Andrew posted the 1871 census for Celia with parents William and Eliza Choke.

In the 1841 and 1851 censuses, Thomas Whitehead born 1820 in Monks Horton, was in Maidstone prison for theft.

In 1857 Eliza Whitehead and her children: James 13; Egerton 9 and William 6 entered St.Martin's workhouse.

So I thought it more likely that Celia's father was William Choke rather than Thomas.

I found it on Findmypast. The mother's name is given as Jessie on all three children's records.

I'm not seeing the christening on Ancestry or FS.
Where did you find it, please?

(Presumably FMP?)

EDIT:

Oh, yes, I see it there.

I wonder if Jessie could just be a pet name for Olivia and that is what was given when the baptism record was filled in?

It seems unlikely that Edward would be given Ottaway as his middle name if he were some other woman's child.

Perhaps Jessie was a "pet" name for Olivia? Or the clerk made a mistake at the christening?

Hi Both

Great information I had found her death but no the actual date

I wonder could the person have misheard the mum's name (although they do not sound similar)

I believe I am on the right line but so frustrating about Jessie

I just wondered if the death I found earlier for Olivia was "your" Olivia. It is always possible that Robert and Olivia just separated and went on to live with someone else, i.e. Robert living with Jessie. I can find no marriage for a Robert Durrant to a Jessie.

Do you know when Robert died? Is he anywhere in any census with Jessie?

Hi Kath

It just confirms 'above age' ?

KathleenBell

KathleenBell Report 28 Aug 2017 13:42

Does the marriage of Robert and Olivia give an age for Olivia?

Middy Report 28 Aug 2017 13:29

The thing that I am confused about is that Jessie is noted as the mother on the baptism record - but at the point of baptism - Robert & Olivia had been married five years before Edward was born? I thought that maybe Jessie could be Olivia middle name but cannot see that either?
